Amazon introduces next major job killer to face Americans

Amazon on Monday unveiled the latest plan to automate American workers out of existence — a futuristic grocery store without any cashiers.

High-tech sensors and artificial intelligence are allowing shoppers at the Seattle food market to swipe an app when they enter, then roam the aisles and grab staples like bread and milk, artisanal cheeses and chocolates and ready-made meals.

Customers can watch as the items they pluck off the shelves get added to a virtual cart on the app — and subtracted if they put them back — with receipts emailed to them once they leave, according to the company.

The 1,800-square-foot Amazon Go store is currently open only to employees of the online retail giant, but the company plans to start letting the public in next year.

Amazon will also test out “large, multifunction stores with curbside pickup capability” and “drive-through prototype locations,” sources told the Wall Street Journal (paywall).

The company wants to open more than 2,000 brick-and-mortar grocery stores, compared with about 2,800 operated by The Kroger Co., now the nation’s largest full-service grocery retailer.

I think we should stop all changes in technology and discourage people from seeking re-training. Then we can all sit back and be comfortable when nothing changes.

I do not envy Bezos. Period. I bought technical engineering type books from Amazon when that was all Amazon was in the mid 90s. I do not order anything from Amazon and haven’t in years. It will be funny when the internet goes down for days and none of you will know how to do anything. OMG I may have to actually do something. But you keep ordering, I could care less.

That would be 'an horizontally integrated tax avoidance megalopoly.'

What a way to monitor dietary habits of the hoi polloi. Imagine your refrigerator intoning gravely in a Siri voice: "We note that you've been consuming a great deal of Häagen-Dazs, Ms. Grubner. We've enrolled you in an approved yoga class."

Will the system keep them out of the store if they have no way to pay? Maybe everyone should be given an identifier. You know, like a mark on the hand or forehead.

I’m sure you would have to show some kind of credit, debit, or EBT card to get into the store.

Warehouses have been using it for years for inventory control.

Speaking of warehouses. The grocery industry has turned to the warehouse model in my neck in the woods. Most of the stores are on the city's edges. I have had 2 stores close down within walking distance of home during the last 10 years. There is a drug store nearby that sells some food, but at twice the price. I have a car, so no biggy. I guess that is progress..

Amazon has come up with some great ideas over the years, It seems like every year they come out with some new idea or store, the only problem is you only hear about these new stores and idea. I’m still waiting to see those drones, and the local Amazon book stores, I will probably never ever see them, I don’t live in a big city. My gut feeling is that they only push these new ideas just enough to keep the big money bag investors in their pockets, and keep their stock prices inflated. Personally I don’t expect them to build only 2 or 3 of these stores and the items will be overpriced, not like their web site, I suspect that in these stores instead of having cashiers, they will have problem solvers you will never see in the cute videos that will be busy correcting what gets screwed up in the process.

Yes, and then you can deny food/services to those who don’t have the correct political/social/religious philosophy.
