Six weeks from taking office, Donald Trump says he wants the government to cut some costs by canceling its order for a new Air Force One, the plane that carries presidents around the globe.
The government has contracted with Boeing to build two or more new planes, which would go into service around 2024. That means Trump wouldnt fly on the new planes unless he pursued and won a second term. But the Air Force has pressed for a faster schedule, saying the current planes are becoming too expensive to repair and keep in good flying shape.
The contract for the planes was to be about $3 billion, but costs have been reported to be rising. Trump tweeted early Tuesday, Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order!

Jeeze, Rooster! We are talking about the 747 AF1, not Trump’s personal plane!
Focus!
Trump can afford the trappings of the Presidency. All the bozos that came before him couldn’t.
I would think it would be worth it to them to be the company that makes AF1.
[One of the reasons AF1 is so special is that it has secure communications equipment that not many other planes have. ]
IIRC, AF1 also has defensive capabilities installed if it is under attack....
I imagine that is a large bulk of the hefty cost.
Don’t forget your coloring books and crayons.
The AP writer doesn’t understand how executive level office terms work. I’m shocked.
Actually, Air Force One was scaring the crap out of Jersey City in that video...
I guess it’s my math that’s off. Doh!
The press wants to ride on a brand new plane, screw the spoiled press.
“The contract for the planes was to be about $3 billion, but costs have been reported to be rising.”
Finally after 35 years putting in that escape pod?
And we never did learn the truth about who was on AF1 when Barky let it buzz NYC, scaring the heck out of everyone.
Depends on what you mean by “obsolete”. There are still orders for the Airbus A380 after all, which is no real technological advance over the B747; and one preliminary design of the B747 was as a double-deck jet.
Of course, I’m the kind of person that laments the fact that the Lockheed Galaxy never had a passenger version produced, tentatively called the L500.
The author uses the article to criticize the lack of experience of Trump’s cabinet picks.
Let’s look at the experience level of Obama and his cabinet picks.
Obama - Community rabble rouser and no-show Senator elected via a series of fixed political contests.
“If Boeing comes knocking on his door to try to save the order, I think Trumps going to tell them to cut the costs or hell go somewhere else.”
China.
Where’s that “China” clip?
Cabinet picks such as Van Jones and Anita Dunn? People who slunk away like whipped curs when exposed as communists?
good point, why has this not been chased up?
Where is our illustrious media in their reporting, oh wait , they’re too busy telling us they are not biased while doing hit job and fake outrage on Trump.
Lease it to the gov’t, let the press fly commercial.
It would also make a lot of cuts into the leather upholstery. That’s a non-starter.
Sell the two buses Zero bought and never used while your at it!
Airbus?
