LAWRENCE, Mass. A 15-year-old boy charged with killing a high school classmate whose headless body was found near a river said in a police report made public Monday that they had gone to smoke marijuana together and he had last seen the classmate alive.
Mathew Borges was held without bail after pleading not guilty at his brief arraignment in Lawrence District Court on a murder charge. Borges is being prosecuted as an adult, so court proceedings were open. His lawyer, Edward Hayden, did not argue for bail.
The body of 16-year-old Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino was found near the Merrimack River in Lawrence on Thursday by a woman walking her dog. Police recovered his head nearby.
Borges told police that he and Viloria-Paulino had gone to the river on Nov. 18 to smoke pot and later parted ways.
But the police report also said Borges told a witness that he had "done something bad" and that he had "stabbed a kid and cut his head off killing him." Borges was arrested Saturday.
The motive for the killing is unclear and remains under investigation, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said. Police recovered evidence at Borges' home, he said.
Both boys were sophomores at Lawrence High School.
Hayden, the defense lawyer, said Borges was a student in good standing with a part-time job. But he said he didn't know enough about the case to comment other than to say Borges is "holding up well as can be expected of someone facing this kind of charge."
Borges is being held at a youth detention facility and is due back in court Jan. 10.
Viloria-Paulino's family has been critical of police, saying they at first said he was just a runaway and took too long to launch an investigation. Police haven't responded to that.

This story has been corrected to show the suspect is 15, not 16, per new information from authorities.
Just a guess, but it looks like to me that the Perp invited the Vic to smoke some dope.
Vic misinterprets the invitation and is expecting a romantic interlude.
Perp freaks out when Vic whips it out. Vocal altercation morphs into physical altercation.
Perp stabs Vic. Decides to hide crime by dismembering victim.
Discovers after lengthy decapitation process that dismembering is not practical.
Covered in blood, having left lots of DNA evidence everywhere, he decides to turn himself in.
I suspect a gay quarrel, after looking at the pics.
Perp in photo loos particularly deranged.
He told someone he did something bad. They found evidence at his home.
I had that thought as well...............
Maybe it wasn’t just pot.
Or behind it...................
LOL!
Could be...................
I thought the same thing.
Borges, you got some 'splainin' to do.
we didn’t have this when I was a kid. Maybe a fistfight out by the bike racks...
Can a child commit adult acts??
Based on these pics, the victim likely made a pass at the perp. Didn’t go so well.
From potheaded to beheaded, thus goes the beheadable millenials.
Another “victimless crime”
Correction, the police report said Borges told a witness that he had "done something bad" and that he had "stabbed a kid and cut his head off killing him.".
Now I am not saying the policeman who wrote the report is a liar, but the fact is that sometimes police reports contain lies. Way too many times eyewitnesses are anything but, and not truthful in their accounts as well.
Trust me, I am a big defender of the police. Not a detractor. But more importantly I am a defender of the justice system and the facts that come out in that system. Does the system fail at times? Of course. We still must not jump to conclusions though until we hear the facts as presented in court. Otherwise, we are doing an injustice to everyone, including the victim.
They found evidence at his home.
That must be from a source different then this one linked to. A reread it a couple of times and see no mention of that in it.
You forgot to mention Mitt Romney having to bend over backwards half a dozen times, waiting for the PR-born school superintendent to pass the MA English literacy test for teachers.
Looks like both of them could have initiated that kind of thing. At least to me.
Oops, “then MA Gov. Mitt Romney....PR-born Lawrence Schools Superintendent...”
