The maggots were eating the gangrene, not the healthy tissue. That is what they were used for in the past and occasionally in the present where there is no medicine near.
Why are so many upset about the maggots, other than that they existed in the VA in the first place. The maggots were eating the rotten flesh, not the live flesh. The maggots may have extended his life, but unfortunately, for a painful death via sepsis.
