Four staff members at the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs Talihina facility have resigned after a resident who later died was found with maggots in a wound, the agency said.
Executive Director Myles Deering said the maggots were discovered while the patient was alive but were not the cause of his death. He said the man came into the center with an infection.
“He did not succumb as a result of the parasites,” Deering said Tuesday. “He succumbed as a result of the sepsis.”
Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening complication of an infection.
A physician’s assistant and three nurses, including the director of nursing, resigned in the wake of the investigation, said Shane Faulkner, a spokesman for the agency.

Absolutely! And leeches were/are used to suck the blood from severe bruises. Someone with a shiner simply puts a leech on it and lets it go to work.

Maggots are actually very good for removing dead tissue; they are not the problem.
The problem is lack of disinfection of the wounds.

The maggots were there doing what the doctors should have been doing. They were too little and too late, I guess.
Exactly. Sell off the hospitals to private organizations and simply give vets vouchers for private insurance. There could still be some centers for vet-sprcific issues run by private research hospitals.
I am confident that Trrump will get this sorted out quickly. He needs a head of VA that doesn’t mind significantly downsizing its portfolio.
The maggots were eating the gangrene, not the healthy tissue. That is what they were used for in the past and occasionally in the present where there is no medicine near.

Why are so many upset about the maggots, other than that they existed in the VA in the first place. The maggots were eating the rotten flesh, not the live flesh. The maggots may have extended his life, but unfortunately, for a painful death via sepsis.

Oklahoma has 7 state operated veterans treatment centers around the state that are not associated w/ US VA.
Oklahoma dept of veterans affairs is not part of US VA.

Thanks for the additional info. I had my doubts that this was part of the federal VA system since I’m not aware of any state involvement with VA facilities here in CA.
