4 employees at VA facility resign, charges being considered.
Four employees at an Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs facility have resigned after a resident with a maggot-infested wound died while under their care.
Vietnam veteran Owen Reese Peterson, 73, initially came to the Talihina Veterans Center with an infection, but ended up with sepsis and died on Oct. 3.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all the tax $$s spent to feed, house and provide medical care for illegals and moslem refugees were spent on our priceless veterans?
Got a son-in-law not getting medical care he needs now from the VA. Iraq war related. Thankfully, daughter has a good enough job with sufficient insurance to get him better care. My heart bleeds for every veteran without options. Federal or State, they deserve it before anyone. By anyone, I do include myself. Zerocare has shafted me, but my son-in-law and every other veteran we have is more important. /soapbox
A lot of liberals fail to realize that the VA is what socialized medicine would be like on a national scale.
My Dad went for assistance that didn’t require hospitalization. If you go to the VA website, it lists all of the State VA facilities.
In my opinion it is the Federal Government’s responsibility to oversee and make sure that these Veterans are receiving proper and up-to-date treatment at whatever facility. They did not fight for a “state war”. They fought for the United States of America.
You are exactly right!
And a lot more liberals are not only aware, that is the desire. The power to deny medical care - ultimate political power.
Like Anthropomorphic Global Warming (and all its synonymous iterations) and the attempt to claim government ownership of rainwater the ultimate goal is politically enforced population reduction.
My sister has been hammering me to get into the VA for 2 or 3 years. (die hard Democrat)
This kind of thing is why I’ve always refused, despite the arguments.
Everyone I’ve talked to has taken a year or more just to get signed up, when it should be a half hour process, and all have said once they did get in, it was a nightmare.
She didn’t even let up once the problems in the VA became public. I told her when it happened they’ll do just enough to say they did something, and soon as it dies out of the news cycle it will go right back to business as usual.
So what happened? So far one person has been fired as far as I know, until these 4 resigned, nothing has changed, people are still waiting 3 months for an appointment, one vet made a video, he tried to call in to the suicide hotline and got transferred to 5 different computerized answering machines before he got disgusted and hung up...
I knew a guy here locally who was sprayed down with agent orange in Viet Nam, he had cancer, the government refused to admit it, he couldn’t do a a thing about it. So he has cancer, because our government put him in harm’s way, and they refuse to even admit it happened. Much less do anything about it.
This is what we get for putting our lives on the line for our country. I didn’t go to Viet Nam, I would have if had been drafted but I joined the Navy instead, fixed binoculars the whole time so other guys could go out and be targets. But I was worried. A boatload of politicians in DC who wouldn’t fight a war themselves if they had to were plenty willing to send me off to be a target, along with thousands of others who did go or served in support roles, and this is what we get.
Sad...this man was in WWII, a really ugly situation in many cases, I knew a man in Louisiana who was in it too, he had some stories...and they are being treated the same. Terrible.
By July next year I hope we see the whole mess cleaned out and new management in place, people who actually believe in doing their jobs.
Meanwhile Bergdal has requested a pardon from Obama. Both the Dept of the Army and the Pentagon did not know about it since the request for a pardon went through unofficial channels.
Almost all of my family’s veterans are gone.. uncles, brothers and old family friends and neighbors..
It is sad to see so many reports of the horrid treatment or abuse inflicted on so many who gave so much .. heads should roll.. anything less is a slap in all our veterans faces.
The VA has earned scorn, but one of my first jobs as a young medical student was picking maggots out of wounds at a VA ER.
There are people that choose to live on the streets, some of them Vets. The only time I ever saw maggots was when they brought a hobo in to be looked at. Usually, we had to peel their cloths off with the boundary between skin, dirt and clothing being unclear.
That, and it's hard to take her seriously. I want someone in that position who is intimidating and forceful with a commanding demeanor. She's not that.
Tragic and unnecessary!
Pete Hegseth for VA Secretary! He will clean house ruthlessly!
Did Brown ever put on the uniform? Was he ever deployed?
We need a real warrior like Pete Hegseth to head the VA and clean up that shitpot!
May God bless Owen Reese Peterson.
This may indeed be a case of neglect, but they do use maggots today in wounds that won’t heal. Maggots clean away the dead tissue, and help make wounds heal faster.
All veterans after serving should get an automatic $10,000/month pension and free healthcare for themselves and immediate family members.
Good enuf fer government work.
I don’t begrudge the service. I just wonder why anyone in their right mind would go to one of the places. Especially if there were reasonable alternatives.
The Vet may have actually received better as maggots are now front line therapy to keep wounds debrided.
From what I can read we can’t determine his actual state prior to or at time of death. Death is always hard on everyone. I am sorry for his families loss.
All that being said, I have received care ast four VA hospitals. Two were stellar institution and two were not.
You are making a very interesting point, that this is NOT the US federal Dept Of Veterans Affairs.
It is a state operated outfit
Interesting how many just overlooked it and are wailing over the fed version. Now the fed VA does suck, no doubt about it, but apparently the Oklahoma version is no better.
As a vet, I’m so happy I can afford good health insurance and have a good civilian provider. Until Trump straightens this mess out, there’s no way I will place my life in the hands of any veterans health service.
