Gov. Jerry Brown has tabbed Rep. Xavier Becerra to serve as Californias interim attorney general, selecting the Los Angeles Democrat to fill a vacancy opened by the imminent departure of outgoing Attorney General Kamala Harris to the U.S. Senate.
Assuming he wins confirmation by the Legislature a strong possibility, given the 12-term Democrats role as a mainstay of Democratic and Los Angeles politics Becerra would serve as Californias top law enforcement official through 2018, with an opportunity to serve for another eight years if he runs for the office. He would be Californias first Latino attorney general.
The election of Donald Trump as president has alarmed California Democrats and thrown into question the states liberal stances on issues like climate change and immigration. Browns choice of a liberal stalwart like Becerra reaffirmed the states future role as a pocket of resistance.
Xavier has been an outstanding public servant in the State Legislature, the U.S. Congress and as a deputy attorney general, Brown said in an emailed statement. I'm confident he will be a champion for all Californians and help our state aggressively combat climate change.
Referring to himself as the son of immigrants who is motivated to fight for working families like the one I grew up in, Becerra said in a statement that he had accepted Browns offer and summarized his liberal bona fides.
I have been part of some of the greatest debates confronting our nation, from opposing the Iraq War, to fighting to help Americans recover from the Great Recession, to launching the bipartisan immigration talks and helping write our nations health security law, Becerra said, adding that California right now is ahead of the country when it comes to clean energy, common sense treatment of immigrants, real health security and so much more.

Bacerra is a putrifacted joke. Not to mention a crack addict. Nice job, Cali... you’ve got a crack addicted AG!
REagan had the air traffic controllers dumped in his lap. Trump has the idiots in Chicago and LAdoing the sanctuary city thing. Perfect. He will start this presidency with a bang.
Let's see how he does that from jail.
Harboring illegals is a Federal crime. Any Federal Judge who wants to flaunt Federal Law is going to find themselves in the center of President Trump's Twitter cross hairs.
And then comes the Congress.
And then come we the people that want the rule of law enforced again. Trump has opened up a can of worms and I will be glad to join the masses demanding sanity in government again.
To jail with the criminals and those who make it possible. Go ahead, make our day scumbag.
Keep up the attitude of ‘resistance’, California.
It will prove cheaper to build a wall around all or your borders—Ariz—Nevada—Oregon than to keep pumping Federal money into your crappy state.
It was a once beautiful state, but now it is beyond saving-—and most taxpayers don’t wish to pay taxes to do so.
Those who stay after the erection of the fence begins will be charged a ‘relocation’ fee no matter where they go in the rest of the states.
California gas to pay the piper for their past behavior.
Anchor babies GTFO!
They need us. We do not need them.
The antipode of my city is in the Indian Ocean, far from land, but I am willing to take one for the team, because I like to win.
On day one, Trump should arrest and send to Cuba, the 12 biggest sanctuary city’s mayors. They probably speak spanish well anyways.
Sessions will - for masterminding an epic vote fraud effort. Becerra - who has been in a position to know all about it and has done nothing - may get off with five years in a Federal penitentiary.
Wow. Talk about no leverage. It’s not like the 55 electoral votes are going to go anywhere but democrat.
California is at the mercy of Trump. Cut them off.
Trump is shrewd enough that this will be over before it even gets started. Watch and see.
