From the earliest days of his campaign, Donald J. Trump made keeping manufacturing jobs in the United States his signature economic issue, and the decision by Carrier, the big air-conditioner company, to move 2,000 of them from Indiana to Mexico was a tailor-made talking point for him on the stump.
On Thursday, Mr. Trump and Mike Pence, Indianas governor and the vice-president elect, plan to appear at Carriers Indianapolis plant to announce theyve struck a deal with the company to keep a majority of the jobs in the state, according to officials with the transition team as well as Carrier.
Mr. Trump will be hard-pressed to alter the economic forces that have hammered the Rust Belt for decades, but forcing Carrier and its parent company, United Technologies, to reverse course is a powerful tactical strike that will rally his base even before he takes office.
In exchange for keeping the factory running in Indianapolis, Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence are expected to reiterate their campaign pledges to be friendlier to business by easing regulations and overhauling the corporate tax code. In addition, Mr. Trump is expected to tone down his rhetoric threatening 35 percent tariffs on companies like Carrier that shift production south of the border.

Trade policy without tariffs is like a gun without bullets.
I think he should appoint Romney to head the VA. It’s not an ideology driven job, and it’s one that Romney may actually do well given his history of turning around companies and Olympic Games.
In fact, Romney and Carson would be a good tandem, with Mitt running the business admin side of the house and Carson as the chief medical officer.
I don’t like Romney, but if he used his talents to fix the VA and do right by Vets, I’d certainly respect that.
Apple will eat the extra $30 bucks. The consumer will not know the difference.
Tariffs made America an industrial power and funded the govt until 1913. So you would be wrong- again. Buzz off globalist swine.
Winning IS TRUMP!
You’re an idiot. Go away.
Looks like you, the rat globalist, is out numbered 100:1 on this thread! LOL.
Trump is using tariffs as a leverage tactic against cheating (dumping, quotas, etc), not as a revenue source. Reagan did the same thing with Japan.
They would have made it worse.
VAT is not a tarriff. It applies to almost everything you buy regardless of where the purchase comes from.
However: the EU is a customs union and does impose tariffs and quotas, explicitly to protect its domestic producers.
These tarriffs and quotas are why Europe as a continent has had the least economic growth over the last 20 years. Even Antarctica has done better.
The North American continent was always going to become a industrial power-house. Tariffs merely served to make the Northern states rich on the backs of the Southern states.
This tariff slavery caused the greatest disaster in American history: the Civil War. 650,000 deaths, and a huge growth in federal power which the US is struggling to escape from even today.
Why do you hate free association in trade, and seek to deny it to your countrymen? Is tyranny so precious to you that you seek it even under a Trump presidency?
The New York Slimes and the other liberal rags still don’t and won’t get it!
Right. And we have to also pay attention to companies hiring foreign workers for cheap pay when US workers are available. That is killing off the professional and semi-professional (middle) class.
It is truly amazing, isn’t it?
I can’t remember a president-elect who got so much done and hit the ground running like this. Not even a month since the election!!!
God bless you, Mr. Trump!
LOL! Poor Hillary must be heavily medicated these days.
