Why Trump is courting Romney for the State Department
American Thinker ^ | 11/29/2016 | Thomas Lifson

All the brouhaha over the alleged rifts within the Trump transition over Mitt Romney misses the point. I think it is theatre, a distraction by the same man who was able to direct media attention where he wanted it all throughout the campaign. Donald Trump has a plan that eludes his critics, who can’t help thinking about politics the way it has always been played, and still do not grasp his thinking nor the range of new tools he brings to the presidency. The Department of State is badly broken and desperately needs to be fixed. State requires fundamental restructuring as well

I don't really buy the "Trump can't trust Romney" scenario.

A weak leader (Obama) surrounds himself with sycophants.
A strong leader (Trump) will select a powerhouse team.

“those idiotic moves aimed at derailing Trump’s campaign”

*************

I respectfully disagree with that characterization. Those moves were intentional and calculated, and I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that they were also diabolical. I don’t say that lightly. This election was for all the marbles and Mitt took the other side of the trade, as they say in his investment world. In so doing he deliberately undermined the party’s nominee to advance his own agenda.

He knew that his support was critically needed but chose to do things that benefited Hillary, who would have continued Obama’s destructive path. This was an election we could not afford to lose, and Mitt didn’t join the battle. Trump simply cannot reward that kind of disloyalty.

Romney is part of the globalist compromised rinos. He would in the end betray Trump if put in a power position.

On the other hand Secretary of State is probably the best place to put him if you are trying to appease the rinos. Getting the rinos to work with him will mean they need protecting or a safe way to retire(think that one through because these guys are compromised when you realize how much they caved to Obama).

No no no no no no no....

Seriously, does anyone remember what came out of MA Legislature / Courts during his tenure of Governor that either he encouraged or didn't stop?

If policy doesn’t worry people and the SOS just follows the President then we should go for Obama. Imagine coming together of the country! Obama, is respected in the world, particularly Europe and the Muslim nations and it would be a sign that Trump isn’t going to shake the boat too much. I hope the ridiculousness of this argument shows you and others the problem many people have with Mittens and some of the others names we’ve heard for SOS would do not share Trump’s campaign policies.

I understand that there may be upsides to picking Romney, and perhaps—like the author claims—Trump will really run foreign policy while Romney cleans up the State Dept. But, really, I don’t think Romney can be trusted. How do we know he won’t be looking out for his own political interests or enabling the establishment instead of draining the swamp?

It would also just be sad if the most prestigious job in the cabinet goes not to a loyalist but to a back-stabber who led the NeverTrump forces (which had no purpose but to help Hillary get elected, so that the NeverTrumpers would be in a better position to “take the party back” from us).

The only moderating factor in all this is that Trump has clearly shown he is not gunshy about firing people.

Wrong, Mitt Romney doesn’t care about hurting the Trump administration. Look at Trump’s tweets over the last 2 days. Very controversial (from a MSM perspective). How many times is Trump going to say something that Mitt Romney is going to feel the need to disavow on a daily basis. It’ll just be a springboard for him to primary Trump in 2020

I’ve said it before, the difference between now and the campaign is that during the campaign we were constantly hearing from Trump so it was easy to know when the media was talking crap because Trump and his team were there to trash it every step of the way. Right now, we basically have the media’s viewpoint so we really don’t know anything. We just have to trust that Trump remains Trump (which he did during the campaign under immense pressure)

“I’m rationalizing it, I know,...but I am trusting Trump.”

I’m with you. I voted for Trump and I trust him to make these decisions. If Romney fills the bill for Trump, he fills the bill for me.

I like Bolton but he is a warmonger. Trump ran on less war and concentration on terrorists.

The strategy you described played out on The Apprentice. You nailed it.

Trump actually needs someone who will dissolve the State Department and then recreate it under another name with selected individuals. Drain the swamp? Yes, completely.

Mob bosses don’t get other mob bosses to be their counselor. If they did there would have to be a “kiss the ring” moment. A show of loyalty and commitment to the man and the cause.

I am trusting Trump too, but I like to believe that he will choose who he thinks is the best person for the job, politics aside.

STATE IS A JOKE...

State is compromised. They all allowed HRC to use her private server and send and receive classified documents on unauthorized email accounts and then pretended they knew nothing.

HRC's unprotected server was probably the way into the government top secret records and enabled over a million federal employees data to be stolen, among many other breaches State and the press are not reporting.

The Rinos were just thoroughly beaten. All their top guys were summarily rejected by the people. You don’t appease the enemy, you annihilate them

While that is true, firing the Secretary of State can be problematic on a number of levels. Best to minimize the potential for that kind of eventuality. ;)
