Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban boy who was involved in an international custody battle 16 years ago in Miami, is mourning the death of Fidel Castro, a man he compared to a "father."
Elian was a photogenic five-year-old in 1999 when he was found floating on an inner tube off the Florida coast.
Sixteen years later, he is recalling Fidel Castro as a man he likened to a father.
In an interview on Cuban State TV Saturday, he said he wanted Fidel to be proud of him.
Speaking in Spanish, he said, "He is a father who like my father, I wanted to show him everything I achieved."
Now almost 23 years old, Elian remembered when Fidel attended his elementary school graduation.
Gonzalez' mother and other Cubans accompanying the boy died trying to get to the United States from the island 90 miles to the south.
His case quickly became another battle in the long-running feud between Havana and Miami - one that ended with the boy's return to his father and grandparents in Cuba.
clinton’s attorney general did a lot of real low down and dirty stuff for him... she was one bad dude of a person!
Oh, my mistake; I thought it was a fiction novel.
Interesting that there is no mention of his real dad...the guy Castro has apparently replaced after using him.
I change the character, I change the home town, but it has to have some relation to reality, and can’t fly right in its face. The novel has stayed unfinished for at least eight years, and that’s how it will have to remain. There are a few short stories that can be salvaged from the early chapters.
If your dad had you grabbed at gunpoint and taken captive by the last aging omelet chef (i.e., communist dictator), pumped up with happy juice and then brainwashed, you might have issues with him, too, even brainwashed.
I had him pegged as a commie a few years ago.
If it takes you eight years to write a novel, then you’re doing it wrong!
His mother died getting him to the US.The Clintons sent him back to Cuba.
YES!!!
THIS IS WHAT PEOPLE NEED TO REMEMBER!
The EVIL ClinToons Sent Him Back!
Poor guy was brain washed at an early age.
I have no ill will towards him.
Oh, I’m pretty sure he’s completely brainwashed by now and means every word of what he’s saying.
When this child’s mother DIED so Elian could have a better life in America, who demanded he get sent back..THE LEFT..The Clintons sent him back, by force, with a gun pointed to this head..oh the left, how they pretend to be the party of immigrants..gee how about THAT immigrant who fled Communist Cuba for a better life, the reason why the left wanted this child sent back was for one simple reason, Cubans vote Republican, Elian would have just been another Florida Republican voter..can’t have that..so they shipped him back..I feel sorry for him, totally 100 percent brain washed, once you get indoctrinated there is really nothing that can be done to undo that
What if you made him Bahamian?
The folks at NBC are very challenged.
I like the idea! Keep writing!
The evil Clintons sent him back at GUNPOINT!
Exactly. This boy’s mother died so that he could live in Freedom. But that didn’t matter to WRC and Janet Reno. It was a sad day in American history when jack booted thugs broke into his uncle’s house and forced him - at gunpoint to return to the last bastion of communists.
Hey, if you are just minutes out of the gulag, you don’t dis the dictator’s bro.
So how come the Clinton’s aren’t going to the funeral? Afterall, they sent jack-booted thugs to drag the kid out of the house at gunpoint, just so he could be sent back into the arms of Castro.
Bill Clinton will burn in Hell for eternity for what he did to that child. The hispanics regard him as an “elegua “ a holy child, who was protected by dolphins from sharks and other predators. He reached land and was safe with his uncle Lazaro in Miami. Clinton’s thugs stole him and sent him back to Cuba for political convenience.
That was the day I became a Freeper.
