For the left it's a MinMax solution. They lost but if they can motivate their base and delegitimize Trump maybe they can convert the anger into serious opposition to a supreme court appointment or something else beneficial to their cause.
The last time the left sought to deligitimize a Republican president they had considerable success. In 2000 they were able to disrupt the transition, delay numerous presidential appointments and convince Al Qaeda that George Bush was a weak leader who would not be able to respond strongly to a major terrorist attack on US soil. The result was 9/11 and the wars that we are still fighting that resulted from the attack.
