Keep in mind that direct representation was almost non-existent in this country when it was founded. The idea that every idiot who can breathe on a mirror -- and even many that can't -- should participate in the election of leaders in a free nation would have been completely alien to this country's founders.

We reap what we sowed when we changed all those standards of governance ... so maybe we really have no complaint when malcontents and misfits hijack the process.

I totally agree with this and if it were up to me, we would move back to something closer to what the founders had in mind. At that time, only land-owners voted, with (I assume) the idea being that they were the productive citizens. I no longer think land ownership is a good test, but I do think that not being on welfare would be a good test. Those who are on the take should NEVER be allowed to vote themselves more from those who produce. (That includes Congressmen who vote themselves raises from the tax-paying public.)
