There is understandable fear in the land among many African American and Latino families about a Donald Trump presidency.
Its not just incidents of racism and hate; its what his policies will mean for their well-being and for their children. So its a good time for a new study out this month that shows how much ground black and Latino children have to make up in California.
Many of the biggest racial disparities are in education, according to the scorecard compiled by Children Now, an advocacy group based in Oakland. For example, in Sacramento County, while 49 percent of white third-graders read at grade level, only 26 percent of Latino students and 22 percent of African American students do. And while 44 percent of white eighth-graders meet state standards in math, just 22 percent of Latinos and 16 percent of African Americans do.
The racial gap is evident even in wealthier counties. In San Francisco, for instance, while 73 percent of white third-graders read at grade level, only 30 percent of Latino students and 16 percent of African American students do. And the differences are even bigger across counties. A paltry 23 percent of black third-graders in Fresno County read at grade level, but 65 percent do in El Dorado County.

Are these children just gifted differently, or is the culture in which they are raised in the determining factor?
It’s shocking that 51% of White 3rd graders cannot read at the watered down grade level. And, that 54% of White 8th graders cannot compute at watered down grade level.
I thought Obama was going to do that.
That is going to be up to the States to decide, that is where the ‘Education’ is going back to...
He might have just appointed someone to over see the Education in our country, but it will be a short lived job...
There will be NO COMMON CORE...other than that, the States will have their say in education...
How is Donald Trump responsible for California’s failing schools? Wouldn’t you think the blame there falls on the Democratic leadership that has ruled that state for the last several decades? And now it gets laid at the president’s feet?
Is it the presidents job to narrow racial gaps in schools?
NO.
What he could do is eliminate DOE, and stop fedgov taking in all the money from states and taxpayers, and allowing the states and people in those states, total control over their education policies.
Who reads this Liberal rag? I wouldn’t use it as TP.
You mean the racial gap between whites and asians? Is that the racial gap they’re talking about?
But, wait! Desegregation in 1856 was supposed to stop all that!
What happened that blacks, Latinos and whites, when given the SAME schools, teachers, and books, the blacks and Hispanics still cannot keep up!
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink!
1856 should be 1956!
Pretty much every study ever done shows a very significant IQ distribution difference between Blacks and the other two races ( Caucasian and Mongolia). The difference ranges from 10-25 points, which is very significant. This is an average, naturally there are some very bright individuals, however as a group, they fall behind every other group significantly all over the world, and always have.
No amount of “lowering the bar” will help, for each time we lower the requirements, Blacks simply are encouraged to not even try. A successful Black man is often ostracized as a “sell-out” for his efforts to succeed.
Until it becomes cool to be like Thomas Sowell and not Jay-Z, relative scores won’t change.
Educators and politicians don’t like to acknowledge the fact that for a student to be successful, he has to apply individual effort. We have all sat in classrooms where the opportunity is equal for all students, but the application of effort on the part of different students varies. And student effort is just one concept in the mix of success in education the educators have no control over.
sure...separate but equal.
“Are these children just gifted differently, or is the culture in which they are raised in the determining factor?”
I believe the “gifted differently” came first, which in turn caused them to develop an inferior culture, and the two caused them to have the “racial gap” in school and pretty much everywhere else.
I’m afraid Trump (or anybody else) won’t be able to do much about the “gap”, except marginally.
Neither Trump, nor anyone else, can “narrow racial gaps” in schools. This is, has always been, a parental issue, and a cultural issue. As long as those are corrupted, there is no hope for many.
Can Trump make a Daschund outrun a Greyhound? How is this the government’s job at any level, let alone the president’s?
No.
Of course not.All the Rat Party has to offer is racial tension (among other types).Never in a million years will they allow *any* kind of harmony.
