Aretha Franklin's Insanely Long Five Minute National Anthem Causes a Twitter Meltdown
CBS ^ | 11/25/16 GMT | y John Breech

The only thing more dramatic than the Lions' 16-13 fourth-quarter win over the Vikings on Thursday was Aretha Franklin's rendition of the national anthem.

Actually, "dramatic" might not be the best word to use to describe Franklin's performance.

"Never-ending" would probably work better after Franklin somehow managed to belt the anthem out for a full four minutes and 35 seconds.

To put that into perspective, oddsmakers usually expect the national anthem at the Super Bowl to run for roughly two minutes.

Franklin doubled that, plus some, and let's just say people on Twitter weren't amused.

Agree. First and last regular season games, All Star games, playoffs and 4th of July baseball and maybe some other holidays like yesterday.

I was carving the Turkey (to take to a pot luck) when it came on and after hearing the first refrain decided it wasn’t worth paying attention to. Did the grand old lady “Roseanne Barr” it?

She sang it like "Bleeding Gums" Murphy on The Simpsons (youtube link).

No, she "Ray Charles'd" it.

The problem is the whining ball-heads.

Not only about HER but she is not the performer she once was (to put it mildly). Listening to her aging voice was the most painful part for those who “remember when”....

Whitney Houston’s version at Super Bowl XXV in Tampa is still my favorite. She sang it with heart and emotion the way it is supposed to be sung. It was very emotional due to the fact that desert storm had just begun and everyone was given a small flag to wave.

It was Chinchilla, a dense grey fur removed from a very cute animal who needed it more than she did.

The 1 hour football game is over 3 hours so Aretha Franklin was just going along with flow.

I thought it was great. It probably did go on a bit long. This one is still my favorite however.

This one gave me and all the folks at the football party I was at the goosebumps. (Please disregard the players from my team kneeling on the sidelines)

Sorry for my lack of patriotism, but I DVR’d the game and fast-forward over it.

That Simpson's pardody you posted was the perfect satirization of what was wrong with Aretha Franklin's rendition.

"Rythm and Blues" version. If you see the clock in the cartoon, his version lasted 26 minutes.

If it was Melania Trump wearing an expensive fur in an indoor stadium game, the media, animal rights activists, and leftists would have crucified her. But, black liberals get a pass.
