The flood of fake news this election season got support from a sophisticated Russian propaganda campaign that created and spread misleading articles online with the goal of punishing Democrat Hillary Clinton, helping Republican Donald Trump and undermining faith in American democracy, say independent researchers who tracked the operation.
Russias increasingly sophisticated propaganda machinery including thousands of botnets, teams of paid human trolls, and networks of websites and social-media accounts echoed and amplified right-wing sites across the Internet as they portrayed Clinton as a criminal hiding potentially fatal health problems and preparing to hand control of the nation to a shadowy cabal of global financiers. The effort also sought to heighten the appearance of international tensions and promote fear of looming hostilities with nuclear-armed Russia.
Two teams of independent researchers found that the Russians exploited American-made technology platforms to attack U.S. democracy at a particularly vulnerable moment, as an insurgent candidate harnessed a wide range of grievances to claim the White House. The sophistication of the Russian tactics may complicate efforts by Facebook and Google to crack down on fake news, as they have vowed to do after widespread complaints about the problem.
There is no way to know whether the Russian campaign proved decisive in electing Trump, but researchers portray it as part of a broadly effective strategy of sowing distrust in U.S. democracy and its leaders. The tactics included penetrating the computers of election officials in several states and releasing troves of hacked emails that embarrassed Clinton in the final months of her campaign.

For years. In the '30s, the Liberal Media was telling everyone how Stalin was such a great guy.
Was Russia responsible for the fake polls that were reported nationwide day in and day out?
Wow. The lunacy of the left is like mental ebola.
A good example of fake news was the manipulated ABC/Washington Post tracking poll which served to skew the Real Clear Politics daily poll average in Clinton’s favor. All the MSM fake polls created a complacency in the Clinton camp and energized Trump voters.
Now the Post is blaming “fake news” which most voters never saw.
The irony is this story right here is most likely fake news.
The Washington Post dares to accuse anyone of “false news?”
The day before the election I spend 7 hours waiting at the mechanics while my car was being repaired. In the waiting room was that day’s WaPo, which I hadn’t read in years. Holy Moly!
Column after column was either a) pro-Hillary! with all kinds of cheery expectations or b) viciously anti-Trump. To read that paper, Trump might as well have conceded on the Monday before the election. It was over, he was dead politically, the GOP was too.
This is not ignorance. They are trying to build a case with the American people for a future clampdown on free speech. They never want this popular revolt against the elites to ever happen again.
And I’ll best this propaganda piece doesn’t mention what those stories were.
Do they cite one example?
“Left wing loved Russia when they were invading and murdering tens of millions of people in the name of Communism.”
The Soviet Union was mother’s milk to these cretins.
If there were fake articles give us copies of them to support your claims. Evidence.
PRECISELY as Rush Limbaugh has demonstrated countless time she over the past 20 years when the MSM all use the exact same phrase or word to describe something. Remember "gravitas"? A somewhat obscure and infrequently used word suddenly used to describe Dick Cheney in 2000. See:
The 'Gravitas' Game by Thomas Sowell, August 1, 2000:
Democrats follow tried and true principles of propaganda, using the same phrases again and again, to drive the words into the public's heads. Remember "it does not rise to the level of impeachment"? Or "a risky scheme"? Or "tax cuts for the rich"?
This is projection by the leftists / statists, pure and simple.
The Left wanted us out of WWII until the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union.
It’s as if they woke up one day and realized “holy crap with wikileaks and all, everyone is going to see we’ve been doing nothing but fake news!”. So in response, they start calling everything ELSE “fake news”, so now when the claims are made everyone is confused and the average person doesn’t know what to believe. THen they MSM steps in and calmly says ‘This is why we’re here, let us sort it all out for you”. The MSM is terrified that social media and what they call the alt-right will render them obsolete a lot faster than they figured, and they see everything slipping away. So they do desperate things, like this.
Funny i just went to Trump’s web site and read his policy papers and then listened to his speeches. then decided to vote for him. funny how that not fake stuff works.
Trump’s website obviously cast a hypnotic spell over you ;-)
LOL
The hilarious thing is that the article claims that fake news was used to spread around conspiracy theories about how dark, evil forces are controlling world events...
Highly ironic considering the whole premise of THIS article is that a dark, evil force conspired to control our election outcome.
The Soviet Union placed moles in many places that influence the public in the first half of the last century. The news media, Hollywood, schools, and universities were all targeted.
Now their protégés are claiming that Russia is planting false stories. That is rich.
I saw an analysis of bots planting fake comments to try to sway opinion: most of the bots were planting leftist opinion designed to prop Hillary up. Few of the bots were posting conservative comments.
Of the issues that need to be tackled immediately:
—Restore the integrity of the vote. Use voter ID, audit the voting process, clean the voter rolls.
—Break up the media monopoly. I saw recently that something like 6 major companies control the media. We definitely need more competition there.
—Enforce our borders and immigration law.
Without fixing these issues, any other issues are moot.
