Queens Man Cuffed for Pushing Straphanger Onto Harlem Subway Tracks; Yelled, 'I Hate White People'

Cops busted a Queens man for trying to push a straphanger onto the subway tracks in Harlem and yelling, “I hate white people!”

Police cuffed Gary Weeks, 51, of Wavecrest for the bizarre attack Monday at 2 p.m. at the 4-5-6 subway station at 125th St. and Lexington Ave., officials said.

The straphanger was waiting for a northbound train when Weeks walked up to him and tried to push him onto the tracks.

The victim got away from Weeks, as other people started pointing and yelling at the attacker to simmer down.

He then began yelling about his hatred for whites.

Once cops closed in and cuffed him, he spit on one officer, police said.

Weeks was charged with attempted murder, aggravated harassment and obstruction of government administration.

People who ride trains in NYC are called straphangers.

Yes, that was pointed out to me. I was assuming they were generically called "passengers" or "riders," and that they became "straphangers" only if standing while holding a strap.

How long ago, and on which MTA line have you seen straps?

Those things hanging down along the seats for people who are standing? Unless, of course, you have some definition from 1910 that I'm unaware of.

I was born in Manhattan. These days drive 12 miles to work on back roads, sipping coffee and listening to the radio.

I know.

I have no idea what mm is referring to in terms of the current century — perhaps a relic on the High Line.

Hate crime

True, but he still didn't deserve to get pushed onto the tracks.

If I correctly understand the foreign culture we’re discussing, that would be in a subcategory under “seatsitter,” which is not actually a category at all, because everyone’s a “straphanger,” even if seated.

One more reason I’m glad I drive.

Don’t get so high and mighty - I was riding the trains when you were in short pants. Perhaps I’m thinking of the bar above the seats almost out of my reach; but then when you have to endure inner-city brats hang-gliding over your head (and ignored by police) on the Grand Central shuttle - you don’t notice the disappearance of straps.

The straphanger term is obsolete in NYC as their subway cars no longer have strap handles. Instead, those standing must clutch onto an assortment of metal poles and bars. But the term "straphanger" stuck and is not going away anytime soon.

The photo below is how NYC subway cars look today. Below that is the way it used to be.

The strap handles were eliminated because they often needed to be repaired. The new poles and bars have no moving parts so are low maintenance.

The NYC subway system fascinates me. It is massive, still growing, and one of the greatest achievements in human history.

Thank you. That is very informative. I have been on the subway in Philadelphia, Washington, and London, but never in New York.

It’s not just a NYC thing. In my early days, I used to ride the subway in Boston and you also had people being pushed onto the tracks. It’s a rare thing but it’s common sense not to stand close to the edge of the platform when a train is barreling in no matter where you are.

There are sick people out there.

“Straphanger” must be just a nickname for subway rider.
