When U.S.-backed Iraqi forces pushed [1] ISIS out of Nimrud last week, they found 70 percent [2] of the 3,000-year-old Assyrian village razed and its 140-foot tall mud brick ziggurat [3], which is considered one of ancient Mesopotamias most spectacular structures, reduced to a pile of dirt.
The destruction was worse than we thought, Iraqi Ministry of Culture General Director Qais Hussein said [4], adding that its a huge loss to Iraqi heritage and to world history.
After two years of occupation by ISIS, much of Nimrud , including what is widely believed to be the worlds first library, has been destroyed, the Voice of America news agency reported [5].
The 2,900-year-old ziggurat was bulldozed and pushed into the ancient bed of the Tigris River, John Curtis, president of the British Institute for the Study of Iraq, told [6] the ArtNewspaper, calling it the worst damage that ISIL has inflicted on Iraqi archaeology.
National Geographic has published satellite photographs [7] of the area, one showing the ziggurat on August 31st, and another photo taken on October 2nd after the structure had been bulldozed to the ground.
Last year, ISIS released video of its fighters using explosives [8] and sledgehammers [9] to smash ancient artifacts in Nimrud - including the lamassus [10], statues of winged creatures that guarded the palace of Ashurnasirpal II [11] for three millennia - because the jihadist group believes that pre-Islamic art and architecture are idolatrous.

Liberal elites hate the idea of the Southern United States having a 'History' different than the one THEY approve of... This is the same thing... hatred of 'the other'.
Would’ve been preferable for the Iraqi army to have put up a better fight in the first place. They had a massive manpower advantage in that area, yet melted like butter in summer when threatened.
ISIS are Nimrods? Does Hussein know?
Excellent point!
Just a travesty and ISIS is erasing Iraq while the world watches and yawns.
The UN doesn’t care
Europe doesn’t care.
No one in the Middle East cares.
The United States couldn’t care less...
Iraq will shortly be off my bucket list soon, as it will no longer have anything that draws me to it.
It bugs the Muslims that 3,000 years ago the Assyrians were more civilized than they are now. Better destroy the evidence. This is Mohammedville, and always has been!
This destruction was brought to the world by
Clinton, Obama and Rice — all on PCP
during their rape of children (pizza for all).
Disgusting.
Utterly disgusting.
An absolute tragedy! What’s the point of having these international organizations (UN and UNESCO) if they don’t do jack to protect these sites!?!
Well if the u.n. had designated them as world heritage sites they’d be in hot water now. Harsh memo to follow. Along with a truck load of condemnation would teach ‘em a lesson.
Yes, and very sad to see.
Where are the voices of peaceful islam, denouncing and condemning the destruction of their ancestral ethnic origins?
This is the future of Europe once the muslims reach critical mass. And they will, the stupid Europeans made sure of it with their shortsighted and stupid immigration policies, of which this latest “refugee crisis” is just the latest mistake. In a couple of generations, Notre Dame, Versailles, and the Vatican will all be burned by these animals.
They’ve destroyed plenty of World Heritage sites and even the crickets can’t be heard...
In a way, isn’t this what the left is doing here? Talk of moving or tearing down memorials and statues of founding fathers and important historical icons because they are not PC?
Unless something changes in the next 5 years, I don't think it will be in a couple of generations, it will be within 15-20 years.
Eggs-zacyly what my opening comment was meant to imply. If you don’t like history, eradicate any mention of it. Boom! Doesn’t exist. Therefore, slavery never existed either. Two can play that game.
Thanks
What really bugs them is anything which might point to the historical non-existence of their so called prophet.
