California's secession: Could Christmas come early for the rest of us?
American Thinker ^ | November 23, 2016 | Ed Straker

Posted on 11/23/2016 4:31:17 AM PST by NYer

"Should California become a free, sovereign, and independent country?"

The question could appear on a statewide ballot in 2018 if a group of secessionists has its way.

Marcus Evans, the vice president of Yes California, filed a proposed ballot measure with the Attorney General's Office on Monday that would appear on the November 2018 gubernatorial ballot.

If voters approve the measure, it would establish a special election in March 2019 to ask voters again if they want California to become an independent country, Yes California wrote in a ballot measure filing.

More than half of the registered voters in the state must participate in the special election and at least 55 percent must vote "yes" for the proposal to move forward, according to information submitted by the group. If voters approve the measure, "the governor shall carry and shepherd an application for the newly independent Republic of California to join the United Nations," they say.

Evans said the group filed the ballot proposal in response to an uptick in support in a deep-blue state following the election of Donald Trump.

You may think, what does it matter?  California can't unilaterally decide to withdraw from the Union.  But you forget, there are two legal standards: one for conservatives and one for liberals.  Conservatives are prosecuted if they choose to disregard laws or even regulations or court decisions on marriage being redefined to include same-sex couples, letting boys in girls' bathrooms, or voter ID nullification.  But liberals are held to a very different standard.  They create sanctuary cities in defiance of federal law without consequence.  They legalize narcotics, first timidly for "medical" use, then boldly for "recreational" use, despite prohibitions in federal law, and have suffered no penalty for it.

You can thank DUMBO who restricted or cut Granny’s pain meds off. I belong to a self help patient’s board, and PAIN is a big issue with those with incurable or inoperable disease that PAIN at level 9 will leave you in a fetal position in bed every day. They forced expensive Pain Management on us, and these idiots are more mental health than knowledgeable about pain meds. Nor do they know a thing about the disease that causes the pain or any understanding of it. Your specialist should be the one treating you, not an IDIOT mental health worker.

I would rather see the liberals in California put all of their energy into this effort than fighting a President Trump.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren’t a number of internal counties in California red? Prehaps the counties on the coast would secede, not the inland counties.

Good to joke around about, but California is staying in the union. We fought a civil war over that.

Additionally, it would be giving the mexifornian invasion what they want....what they are trying to do.

Seems all of the agitators I’ve run across are former university students.

Federal funding for universities is their reward for supporting big government, a guaranteed living for those who can consequently insulate themselves from the negative feedback of job-market competition. The only people who will pay for professional agitators are super rich patrons like Soros, and there aren't enough of those to fund an army. So, they make the FedGov into a patron, thereby making US patrons, willy-nilly.

FedGov should get completely out of education. Let George pay for this if he wants it.

There is no political will to fight a silly war to keep a state in the Union. None.

What would be the point? They cannot support their own social programs and will be broke in no time. They will become just like Mexico in a matter of a couple of years and we will have to extend the fence all the way up the coast to keep them from illegally crossing the boarder to take our jobs and benefits.

So the leftists are all in favor of Globalism and the breaking down of borders. Then they lose an election and they want to create a new state with new borders to wall themselves off from the United States.

Do liberals lack logical thinking abilities?

“The open border crowd loves our dictatorial all powerful federal govt.”

The dictatorial all powerful federal government is not trying to protect the nation, but eradicate it.

Obviously, there will be people here, just not Americans. And, obviously, it will be a dictatorship.

You are incorrect. As of 2014 latinos make up 32% of California’s populace

Cafalornia [sic] may be “out-they-heads”.
CA ain’t going ‘nowheres’ because their tax-base is dependent on WashDC sending them money.

Now...TX may be in the proper position?
Texit!

For consideration.

The coastal part of CA splits off and forms its own country. The US threatens to invade the new sovereign country. CA forms a mutual defense treaty with China stating an attack in one is an attack on both.

Does the US invade?

It is part of La Razas and MeCHAs goal. They have wanted to take back California since the sixties. The movement is populated by communists

Folks, if California withdraws from the USA, it will die on the vine of failed nations!!! The cure for California is to deport all the illegals back to their home nations, get rid of the drug dealers, th gang cabals, the woman traffic traders and illegal voters, throw out any elected Democrat in the state, and return to a government that represents only Americans, not the riff-raff of illegals that populate, live and, vote illegally, by the millions, in this once great state!!!

Plus:
1. California "country" would have to solve its own enormous debt problem, with no help from the U.S.
2. California "country" would have to negotiate trans-national-boundary water rights from the U.S.
3. The gigantic flow of entitlements from DC to California "country" would stop.
4. California "country" would still have to deal with the staggering illegal alien problem (that it currently won't acknowledge exists).

Oh yeah, California's gonna secede. /sarcasm

They’ll be starving in 10 years. The Marxists will tax anyone “wealthy” as well as any business into leaving this new country.

So if California secedes from the Union, would the US Federal government insist on imposing the expatriation tax on each citizen or resident of California?

What about Social Security and other Federal entitlements? Would Californians lose all of that?

Your scenario has no merit because their is no political will to farce a state back into the Union through invasion. None. Who would fight your war? Not me.
