California's secession: Could Christmas come early for the rest of us?
American Thinker ^ | November 23, 2016 | Ed Straker

Posted on 11/23/2016 4:31:17 AM PST by NYer

"Should California become a free, sovereign, and independent country?"

The question could appear on a statewide ballot in 2018 if a group of secessionists has its way.

Marcus Evans, the vice president of Yes California, filed a proposed ballot measure with the Attorney General's Office on Monday that would appear on the November 2018 gubernatorial ballot.

If voters approve the measure, it would establish a special election in March 2019 to ask voters again if they want California to become an independent country, Yes California wrote in a ballot measure filing.

More than half of the registered voters in the state must participate in the special election and at least 55 percent must vote "yes" for the proposal to move forward, according to information submitted by the group. If voters approve the measure, "the governor shall carry and shepherd an application for the newly independent Republic of California to join the United Nations," they say.

Evans said the group filed the ballot proposal in response to an uptick in support in a deep-blue state following the election of Donald Trump.

You may think, what does it matter?  California can't unilaterally decide to withdraw from the Union.  But you forget, there are two legal standards: one for conservatives and one for liberals.  Conservatives are prosecuted if they choose to disregard laws or even regulations or court decisions on marriage being redefined to include same-sex couples, letting boys in girls' bathrooms, or voter ID nullification.  But liberals are held to a very different standard.  They create sanctuary cities in defiance of federal law without consequence.  They legalize narcotics, first timidly for "medical" use, then boldly for "recreational" use, despite prohibitions in federal law, and have suffered no penalty for it.

Delusion.....

If you go look at your water heater, up near the top is a funny looking thing with a lever on it. That is a pop off or pressure relief valve. If for some reason the thermostat fails and the water gets too hot the pop off valve will relieve the pressure and the heater will not explode

The secession exercise is a pop off valve releaving the Trump over pressure

Can counties secede from a state? If so, then perhaps the best answer for this is for the inland counties to vote on seceding from CA and seeking to join with neighboring states on their eastern border.

You might be surprised at how many conservative votes a medical MMJ would get, since the DEA and DUMBO restricted or cut off Granny’s pain meds. Most are turning to MMJ looking for pain relief from illnesses that have no cure and cause level 9 constant pain and leave them near invalids and on DSS. When with a reduction of pain they’d still be able to work at least PT or even some full time most of the time.

Instead we are treated like Street Junkies with embarrassing drug testing and nearly mandatory Pain Management who haven’t the slightest clue how to hand the disease that causes the pain. Then you get a patient like me who has severe nerve damage, their normal drugs are ER trips for me. Narcotics are not even in the scope of use as OA, and Estrogen’s ruined my digestive tract, they shut my bowels down. So even for severe pain narcotics are a rare 1 or 2 day thing I always regret. Live on Tylenol.

That would reduce Hillary’s Electoral votes by 55 and her popular vote total by about 8 million. Hmmm.

We could follow precedent, invade California and subjugate it, then impose a Constitutional Amendment or Article V convention to politically neuter it for a decade...

Who is we? You got a turd in your pocket? Spoken like a bloodthirsty goon. Lincoln would be proud.

Billions upon billions in current debt and even worse future liabilities.

The California Peso would be worth less than the current Mexican Peso.

Which song would be their national anthem? California Dreamin’ is out. Libtards don’t like the part about going into a church.

California needs to be split into two states. California in the south and Jefferson in the north. (There’s also a few counties in Oregon that would like to be part of Jefferson.)

Then let California leave. (Jefferson would be predominantly conservative.)

Maybe on a county-by-county basis...

No, on second thought, disgruntled Californians--or anyone else--can move to Zimbabwe or North Korea (Canada and Mexico won't take them), but the real estate remains in the U.S.A.

Maybe California could revert to "Territory Status", i.e. become a "protectorate", until she is purged of illegals and the Leftists have had time to move to Zimbabwe.

Dear Mr. Straker,

You said "California can't unilaterally decide to withdraw from the Union."

Can you show us where in the Constitution it says a state cannot withdraw from the Union?

Thanks,

Go CALEXIT!

What a gift California could give to the United States. I wonder how many of them we could export back to their home country. Colorado could use a good cleansing.

Would save us a trillion over a couple years - they we would have to build another wall to keep them from sneaking back in when their Nirvana didn’t pan out the way their feeble minds imagined it.

The CA kooks wouldn’t have to fight. They could secede and nobody would care. There would not be a war over dragging a state back into the Union. Nobody would fight there is no political will to do so. I wouldn’t.

Would California need to pay off its share of the national debt before leaving the union?

Probably just need to split off Los Angeles county and San Francisco county to get the the job done.
I would rather keep California in the Union.
