California's secession: Could Christmas come early for the rest of us?
American Thinker ^ | November 23, 2016 | Ed Straker

"Should California become a free, sovereign, and independent country?"

The question could appear on a statewide ballot in 2018 if a group of secessionists has its way.

Marcus Evans, the vice president of Yes California, filed a proposed ballot measure with the Attorney General's Office on Monday that would appear on the November 2018 gubernatorial ballot.

If voters approve the measure, it would establish a special election in March 2019 to ask voters again if they want California to become an independent country, Yes California wrote in a ballot measure filing.

More than half of the registered voters in the state must participate in the special election and at least 55 percent must vote "yes" for the proposal to move forward, according to information submitted by the group. If voters approve the measure, "the governor shall carry and shepherd an application for the newly independent Republic of California to join the United Nations," they say.

Evans said the group filed the ballot proposal in response to an uptick in support in a deep-blue state following the election of Donald Trump.

You may think, what does it matter?  California can't unilaterally decide to withdraw from the Union.  But you forget, there are two legal standards: one for conservatives and one for liberals.  Conservatives are prosecuted if they choose to disregard laws or even regulations or court decisions on marriage being redefined to include same-sex couples, letting boys in girls' bathrooms, or voter ID nullification.  But liberals are held to a very different standard.  They create sanctuary cities in defiance of federal law without consequence.  They legalize narcotics, first timidly for "medical" use, then boldly for "recreational" use, despite prohibitions in federal law, and have suffered no penalty for it.

So we’re going to send in the “Union” soldiers if they succeed, right?

1) regarding federal military bases in a independent California:

The US military currently has 800 military bases in foreign countries, some of these have been bases for 75+ years. not a deal breaker

2) federal property in California;

Title is typically held by a federal entity ( Dept. of Interior, DOJ, Treasury, etc ). These entities can decide to hold, sell, or abandon their property the same as any property holder.

3) Social Security and/or federal pensions:

plenty of Americans currently living overseas collect ss and/or federal pensions. not the slightest practical issue.

4) Water;

Water allocation rights are negotiated between the respective states. These ‘treaties’ would remain in force.

5) Electricity:

Existing power purchase agreements would easily remain unchanged. FYI - New York State imports about 30% of its power from Canadian companies.

CALexit could be surprisingly uneventful. And a very good outcome for the rest of Americans.

Their efforts will go nowhere. Not even the (R) controlled states would allow it. Far, far too much money and strategic land at stake.

“allow it ?”

if Californians vote in favor of independence do you honestly believe members of the US military would follow orders to bomb Disneyland ?

Once the ballot measure passes in 2018, there will be a 2-3 year negotiated peaceful separation. it’s too simple and straightforward.

Why would they be ordered to bomb Disney land?

Do you honestly think Californian’s would fight for independence?

Do you think members of the U.S. military would resign and sign on to a Republic of California Army?

They have no militia to speak of. Do you think their “leaders” are willing to fight a guerrilla war?

Their leadership would be arrested and tried for treason. Those who had voted for the measure would be forbidden from voting for 20 years, and unable to hold office.

Huh? bomb it? Who said anything about bombing Ca?

If CA passes their stupid leave the union vote (not likely), the state can not leave the union peacefully unless the other states "allow it."

Scalia is not the first Supreme Court justice to establish this position. In the case of Texas v. White in 1869, Supreme Court Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase wrote that, “The union between Texas and the other states was as complete, as perpetual, and as indissoluble as the union between the original states. There was no place for reconsideration or revocation, except through revolution or through consent of the States.
http://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/is-secession-legal/

As mentioned, the majority of the other states would not allow it.

Ca being allowed to leave the union would be the crack in the damn for the other nearly identical states (politically) in Oregon and Washington and potentially Hawaii. All of which have had these small movements who want to succeed. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

Guess we could always base the entire Pacific fleet in Alaska and Guam.

Letting the #1 income and food producing state leave the country would be detrimental to the united states and allow a way for OR, WA and HI to leave as well. Heck, the new leftist "country" on the west coast would probably hate the idea of spending their own money on national defense and simply allow their fellow travelers from China to base their troops and navy in the former U.S. bases throughout those states.

No thanks, I'd prefer the 50 states remain intact, including the entire western seaboard, and try to aspire to keep "a more perfect union" by defeating the leftists at the ballot box.

Now of course, a viable alternative to this would be for the conservatives of Northern CA (and parts of southern OR) to become successful in their nearly 75 year old effort to create another state altogether. The State of Jefferson.
State of Jefferson video (history)

Were it not for the events on December 7th, 1941, it might have happened during that time.

Two more conservative Senators and several more conservative reps in the House would be a net positive for us and the libs could run the remaining states of CA and OR they way they see fit.

Lets help them get the conservative 51st state created.

Anyone resisting even the concept of CA independence SHOULD NOT BE POSTING ON "FREE REPUBLIC"

Another gem from central_vag.

You can't say that ISIS and Kim Jong-un aren't getting their money's worth with him.
