In 2018, the issue of whether California should secede from the union could come to a head.
Yes California Independence Campaign, a fringe political group that calls for the state to become an independent nation, filed a proposed ballot measure with the Attorney General's Office on November 21, The Sacramento Bee reports.
If it garners the half a million signatures required to appear on the 2018 gubernatorial ballot, the measure would strike language from the state constitution that would help clear a path to secession.
Still, a state holds no right to secede under federal law. Californians would need to pass an amendment to the US Constitution, which requires the blessings of the other 49 states.
The measure would also survey voters on whether a "Calexit" is something that interests them. If a clear majority declares their support for a Brexit-style departure, the state would hold a special election in March 2019 asking voters again if they want California to secede.
In a recent interview with Business Insider, Louis Marinelli, president of Yes California, described the plans as a "double opt-in" process.
Far-fetched as it may sound, Calexit started gathering steam as Californians came to terms with a Donald Trump presidency on November 9. The campaign became a nationwide social media trend in a matter of hours, but has since fizzled.

Sure, just as soon as they let northeastern California secede from California.
Please, God, please let this happen! This means no Cali illegals could enter the USA without a passport.

Water is the big one. They leave and there would no longer be a reason to divert the Colorado River to quench LA’s thirst.
There is absolutely no benefit to Bear Flag Revolt and California becoming a Lone Star state once again.
The only argument I have ever heard was one of so called unique California culture or “This use to belong to Mexico” which it never did or technically in the least tangential way could have.
Besides bursting out that childish statement, what is the end goal?
Give it back to Mexico?
If Mexico were ever or is so great, why do so many people leave? With the help of their own government.
Being part of the Mexico union benefits only Mexico, as in their Federal government. The people will see no appreciable benefit to California becoming a part of Mexico.
Besides, the effect would be the largest wholesale migration east ward to other states as Americans leave a country that has only a 34% literacy rate and a per capita earnings of less than $10,000.
Those people will come demanding their Bene’s and there will not be enough to go around, crime will then skyrocket as Mexico celebrates getting its land back but, not realizing they are losing the real treasure, an educated, highly productive workforce and business people who create wealth and jobs.
This initiative is nothing more than feel good malapropism that will cost millions just to put on the ballot and ultimately has zero chance of succeeding...
Especially since they just dump so much fresh water into the ocean to save a snail or something.
We would have to build a fence to keep liberals from fleeing their handiwork.
Wish they would do it yet this year or in January. Donald is going to need more money from Mexico to make the wall a whole lot longer. Wonder how Pelousy and Boxer will vote. /s/
They’d never starve; they’re loaded with fruits and nuts!
Can’t wait for tariffs to enter in the US, repaid the ports, etc.
