Forget Donald Trump's Great Wall.
The people who live in the bustling, fertile Rio Grande Valley, where the U.S. border meets the Gulf of Mexico, think a "virtual wall" of surveillance technology makes a lot more sense. It's already in wide use and expanding.

Especially from El Paso to Del Rio. Too rugged. But there are few crossings there.
This kerfuffle is unwarranted. The wall expopsed by zoominf on an exposed position paper describes a wall extending from El Paso to the Pacific.
McAllen is not within those bounds and the complaint is irrelevant
Sorry for the folks on the border but this border wall is also important for National Security and it needs to be done.Sorry for the inconvenience.
And how will they build one across Lake Falcon and Amistad?
Where natural blockades are prevalent, (I.E. Rio Grande) there won’t be a wall, just survelance and manpower. They’ll need that with the wall also. I do believe Trump has said as much.
Now a plethora of drones with night vision cameras would be more than useful.
Tell the liberals that they were right, we will have a virtual wall. We will also build a real one just in case the virtual wall gets hacked by the Russians
Where are you going to put it? Mexico won’t allow it on their side and those who own land that borders the river on the US side won’t allow it. I have friends and family that own dang near 20 miles of that border, your not going to shut off their river access.
Buy them out via eminent domain and be done with it. It’s important for the safety and security of the nation. Sorry, but they need to see past the end of their nose and look at the larger picture.
The “Americans” they talked to were apparently fake ones from over the border.
Ironically, most in this country who oppose the border wall live in gated communities....
The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few. The WALL will be built. We aren’t going to lose our country because some cow hick can’t drill a well like every other cattle rancher in Texas not near the border. Screw that.
I think we should have a wall along every inch of the Mexican border manned by professionals....
Wow......someone forgot to take their meds.
Quit yelling you’ll hurt your throat.
Trump has said from the beginning the wall would be put up where needed. So don’t worry about it.
“Ruin it? R U Kidding? A wall would make it better. What kind of losers are signing into Free Republic these days?”
Those with a brain that can understand common logic. Those that actually live on the border and own land with river access. Our family owns several miles of that border and have friends that own many more. Their livelihood depends on that river access.
Water for livestock? These things are all over Texas.
Boo hoo we are getting a wall get used to it Bub.
Shouldn’t the Chronicle go back to solving The Zodiac Killer mystery instead of writing fantasy stories?
“Especially from El Paso to Del Rio. Too rugged. But there are few crossings there.”
Not even considering that, I’m talking about the landowners on the border. Building a wall or fence on the Texas side gives Mexico the Rio Grande. Those people who own land with the river border will never allow it and I’ll be there to support them. Those ranches are well over 100 years old.
