Americans talk about democracy like its sacred. In public discourse, the more democratic American government is, the better. The people are supposed to rule.
But thats not the premise that underlies Americas political system. Most of the men who founded the United States feared unfettered majority rule. James Madison wrote in Federalist 10 that systems of government based upon pure democracy
have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property. John Adams wrote in 1814 that, Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself.

Trump is amazing. He has made the Left to start quoting Dead White Males with reverence.
Bears repeating!
.....and the 2nd Amendment was meant to protect our government from wannabe tyrants who would steal an election....be very, very careful, nutjobs!
Exactly. A pol with criminal leanings not sufficiently exposed was exactly who the Founders had in mind for the Electoral College to stop.
It is another falsification of history to claim that a successful non-politician would be opposed by the Founders.
Meanwhile, Beinart’s fellow travelers are claiming the opposite of what he states in his headline. Not that Beinart has ever made any sense.
So many things people say now about the electoral college crack me up.
Some people argue “it almost always gives the “right” result, matching the popular vote”. Of course, if it always matches the popular vote, it isn’t doing anything.
The entire point was that we did not WANT the person who got the most votes, we wanted the person who demonstrated majority popularity throughout the country.
Like Donald Trump having the support of the plurality of people in 30 or the 50 states, or 60%, while Clinton had only 40%, plus of course the city of DC.
Good try at leftwing propaganda.
The electoral College was one of the checks put in place so that the smaller areas of large population could not control the entire country. The forefathers called it exactly right and set up a system that defeated the clinton crime family and the useful idiots who supported her.
Once again the constitution worked exactly as it was designed to work. One more time, the liberals are frustrated and angry at the FACT that they are limited by what they believe is an outdated and worthless document.
Just wait until the conservatives introduce the Super Nuclear Option and send SCOTUS candidate to the senate floor for an up or down vote based on a simple majority vote.
A few years ago I clearly stated, with a big smirk on my mug, that the democrats were going to live to regret pulling their nuclear option crap. Well, the nuclear option is soon to be extended to SCOTUS confirmations as well and there is not a damn thing the liberals can do about it.
Remember, every democrat needs to clearly remember, that the nuclear option was all your idea.....
Now live with it.
There is no certainty that the Electoral College, in and of itself, would have prevented the election of Herself to the Presidency. It does allow for some sometimes very fancy bank-shot pool playing, and certain combinations and certain angles are much more productive than others. Widespread fraud in one state does not seriously endanger the overall outcome, but if fraud is going to be attempted, then it may have to be carried out in several places simultaneously.
Herself was just not a very good candidate. For which we may be eternally grateful.
No... it was meant to stop men like Obama from usurping the office as an illegal alien terrorist sympathizer.
Liar. So, what we were taught in school was false? Our political and electoral system worked the way it was supposed to work. And who is unhappy? The losers and liars.
The left continues its rapid descent into self-parody.
If anything, Trump would be the best entry into any form of government we are now saddled with. He at least wants what the original founders wanted. I trust the man as he has skin in the game and no special interests.
Trump may not be what everybody wanted but is what everyone needed. He is the closest to Washington and Jefferson and Jackson and Teddy.
He may very well surprise us and be even greater.
I hope so and so far he has not disappointed.
He said he would not let us down.
WINNING!
BINGO! (But it would’t have, and we all know it)
“The Electoral College Was Meant to Stop Men Like Trump From Being President”

Semper President TRUMP!

I see more and more the news touting the fact Hillary WON the popular vote...now it is by 1-l/2 million. (No doubt all of them the results of illegal voting, dead people voting, and out and out computer fraud...estimated so far as 3,000,000 fraudulent votes, and I doubt any of those votes were for Trump.) Hillary should hang her head in shame and leave the country...before she HAS to leave the country, and quickly!
I can only hope that one of the accomplishments of an entirely Republican government is that we can get a real and honest investigation into voter fraud and find out exactly how deep the rabbit hole goes once and for all.
What a dildo. These people are beyond stupid.
The U.S. Constitution is not a “living” document, any more than Hoyle’s Rules for Card Games is. The Constitution does have a built-in mechanism for making changes, via Amendments. Therefor, making changes willy-nilly is not easy.
Amazing how lib arts arts trolls have never read history.
I can imagine Trump to be on Mount Rushmore one day.
The Constitution only speaks about he Electoral College; it says nothing about popular votes. The fact is that she didn’t gain the support of enough widely dispersed Americans. She only concentrated on race and victim status and depended on her mainstay stalwarts - all the highly infested population centers in this country.
The men who wrote this Constitution knew EXACTLY what they were doing. They were God-inspired and prescient. They all shared one thing - a complete distrust of an all-powerful central government.
