Trump has a plan for government workers. They’re not going to like it.

President-elect Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress are drawing up plans to take on the government bureaucracy they have long railed against, by eroding job protections and grinding down benefits that federal workers have received for a generation.

Hiring freezes, an end to automatic raises, a green light to fire poor performers, a ban on union business on the government’s dime and less generous pensions — these are the contours of the blueprint emerging under Republican control of Washington in January.

These changes were once unthinkable to federal employees, their unions and their supporters in Congress. But Trump’s election as an outsider promising to shake up a system he told voters is awash in “waste, fraud and abuse” has conservatives optimistic that they could do now what Republicans have been unable to do in the 133 years since the civil service was created.

Weren’t government employee unions green-lighted by an executive order by Kennedy? Couldn’t they be removed the same way?

You've been reading my mind again Lurkin, :-). Seriously, a precedent of Unionization has been set by Kennedy, the main Union from what I hear is SEIU. Can you see him doing this and it being fast tracked to "The Supremes?"

Bring it on baby, bring it on, especially if he gets his 1st Pick on the Court....

Assign them to the most far-flung satellite location in Fredricksburg or Hagerstown and put them all to work revising revisions of user documentation. A few weeks in that traffic doing mind-numbing pointless work and many will quit.

“About 0.5 percent of the civil service gets fired every year”

...that’s an amazing number considering that 90% of them are completely incompetent.

Federal workers are seldom fired for poor performance — and it can take years for managers to make a successful case for dismissal for misconduct.

You're going to trust federal managers. There are some agencies where the affirmative action losers will just fire the white people.

job protections and grinding down benefits that federal workers have received for a generation.

Receiving public funds in any capacity is not a birthright.

'Benefits' cost big money and the nation is $20T in debt. Early retirement ages and paying full salaries after individuals have left government employ is both untenable and nonsensical.

The USA is surprisingly like China (where I have some experience)

Government jobs are seen as certainly the most stable, with best benefits, the best paying as well. Stable hours, zero risk, just toe the bureaucracy and political line and all is well. Certainly, the socialists-in-charge will always be in power, and government can always print more money and create more debt, right?

Sure, there are high-flying, sexy, bubble- jobs in finance and high tech, which are attractive, but are for the select few. Otherwise, Gov’t is the way to go.

There are a lot of Democrats who have seen their paycheck and benefits go down and taxes go up. At the same time these non-government Democrat workers have seen the government worker salaries/benefits increase.

Trump has a lot of support of a plan to cut the cost and number of government workers at the Fed, as well as, encourage the same to happen at the State and Local level.

Trump can cut government workers to pay for brick and mortar infrastructures.

This is a winning political gambit that 60% or more of the American public will support.

Understand that the amount of money owed IRS by federal employees is YUGE. Hope something is done to effect collection by whatever means necessary is included in the plans he is putting together, as well as steps to make sure that they all stay current with their taxes in the future.

Thank God. This was my biggest disappointment with the Bush administration. Instead of paring government down, he grew the bureaucracy, which Obummer then put into overdrive.

Please do not fail us now, Mr. President Elect. This will be a sea change that can benefit generations to come.

What you say is true.

That said, any fool in the spillover to MD and VA should know the DC Metro area has been in a bubble for way too many years. The smart ones put their homes on the market last year or earlier this year and have closed the sale on the bubble price.

My idea.

Permanently relocate several federal agencies from DC to deep blue states so that Virginia can be a red state again.
