If Jeff Sessions leaves the Senate, who replaces him?
www.al.com ^ | November 14, 2016 | Cameron Smith

"...If Sessions heads to the Trump administration, he would leave behind a coveted seat in the United States Senate. Governor Bentley would appoint Sessions's replacement in the short-term and set a date for a statewide election to fill the seat.

Given the importance of the seat, we certainly shouldn't rush this. Bentley ought to appoint someone with an eye toward an election being held during the 2018 midterms. Special elections are expensive and often feature low turnout. With most of us experiencing campaign exhaustion, it's prudent to set the election during a normal cycle.

So whom might Bentley appoint if Sessions departs? Several sources I've spoken with suggest a few names on an emerging short list: Representative Martha Roby, Attorney General Luther Strange, state senator Trip Pittman, and state senator Cam Ward.

Like Bentley, Martha Roby didn't back Donald Trump. ..."

At a lower level. But this would be at the top post giving him a chance to unequivocally direct the clean up of D.C. the way he cleaned up NY. This is his strength. He could really be the Mayor of America.

He should stick to his strengths and AG would be it.

He’s weak in other areas as he showed in his 2008 run for the presidency and is equivocal or vague about the unconstitutionality of most federal acts and programs.

The NRA/GOA and 100 more sane groups would scream from the rooftops...NO!

i.e. "He's a good prosecutor and city mayor, but is confused about constitutional limitations on the feds..."

The point is well taken. Is Sessions any clearer about the unconstitutionality of most of the feds' programs and acts?

I think it’s idiotic to be appointing Republican Senators to any Cabinet positions.

Totally agree. These are precious political assets that we can ill afford to lose. The Senate can make or break presidential agendas. I blame the GOP for not grooming younger men and women to fill seats. Why do the damn Democrats know how to play political football and we look clueless?

It’s not a problem if the governor is GOP . . . AND . . . there are 4 more years left in the term. Or it’s a very Red state. If 4 more years that’s enough time for a replacement to get campaigning in place.

But certainly, hold the seat. It’s pretty easy to do, unless the senator has 2 yrs left and is from a Blue or almost blue state.

yep except I was of the opinion that Sessions was a voice in the wilderness. He spoke but most did not hear.

As AG, he can act with authority

He can hang Lois Lerner

Why not Giuliani for AG?

He doesn't understand the 2nd amendment. Never.

Heflin was one of the good ones. Even if he was a Democrat. Plain spoken, intelligent, fair and just an all around good person. Marine officer who fought 4 years in the Pacific.

He strongly opposed legal abortion and all gun control laws. Heflin supported prayer in public schools and opposed extending federal laws against discrimination to homosexuals. He supported the Gulf War of 1991 and opposed cuts in defense spending. With Fritz Hollings from South Carolina, he was one of only two Democrats in the Senate to vote against the Family and Medical Leave Act. He occasionally voted with Republicans on taxes. On other economic issues he was more in sync with the populist wing of his party. He voted against the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and attempts to weaken enforcement of consumer protection measures. He strongly supported affirmative action laws. He memorably voted against the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the United States Supreme Court, having complained of the nominee’s lack of experience.

Hey, you can’t agree on everything. Affirmative action? And he voted against Clarence Thomas because of his lack of experience. And if Mr Heflin said that’s why he voted against Thomas then you can take that to the bank.

Hey, hey, hey! Hell no! It’s awful. Deplorable even. We don’t want any Yankees, sorry!

However, eligible FReepers can have their Yankee records and identity expunged under the right circumstances.

Martha Roby is the FIRST non-Republican I ever voted for in 20 years.

I did not vote for the democrat, but wrote in Becky Garritson, a fine lady of the TEA party here.

I am a #NEVERROBY!

I’d back Mo.

Roby is my Rep, and she is an #NEVERTRUMPer and the Southern version of Kelly Ayotte.

NOT BYRNE!!

TRUST ME. MAJOR POS.

Byrne turned on Trump withdrawing his endorsement when the Ho Blitz hit three weeks before the election. He’s a classic RINO with an opinion that changes with the political wind.

Phil Williams is a state representative out of Gadsden and solid republican in he classic Jefferson Beauregard Sessions mold.

He’s also an Army Reserve colonel with USSOCOM.

I couldn’t agree with you more. It was a moment of levity. I will never his questions to Anita Hill during the Thomas hearings. He was Old South and old school to the bone, a true character, and possessed a dry wit. Truly one of the last of the conservative democrats in that God forsaken party but, to his credit, remained loyal until the end.

When state political leaders began switching to the Republican party in Texas, they were often asked by the media: Why did you leave the democrats. Invariably the answer was: I didn’t. They left me. I believe Senator Heflin sympathized with that sentiment.

I did not intend any offense by the post and I hope none is taken.
