Howard Lake hunter's luck changes big time in bagging 36-point buck near Waverly
Star Tribune ^ | 11-15-16 | Rochelle Olson

The 78-year-old was waiting in a lawn chair when 'trophy' trotted out from cornfield.

Jim Wackler with the 36-point buck he shot near St. Cloud.

Sitting in a lawn chair just before dusk Friday with his 20-gauge Winchester shotgun, Jim Wackler heard the buck coming “like a freight train” before he saw tips from its massive 36-point rack peeking above the field.

“All that dry corn, it was just a’ rattling,” Wackler said Tuesday. “He stuck his head out, looked around a bit and started trotting.”

Wackler, a lifelong hunter who eats what he catches — from squirrel and rabbit to pheasant, goose, duck and bear — hadn’t had much luck this year until he headed out late Friday afternoon from his home in Howard Lake to the farm near Waverly where his daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Mike Young, live.

Wackler, 78, recently gave up his annual hunting trips Up North because he uses a cane now. “My legs are in tough shape,” he said.

The lifelong hunter estimated he’s killed 150 deer. Most were bucks with typical antlers with points, or tines, balanced on each side. The unofficial 36-pointer Wackler bagged has a “nontypical” rack with points that aren’t necessarily balanced and go in multiple directions.

My dad went out when he was older on my bro's 80 acre farm. Dad loved his Browning. Bullets?? For what...He wasn't going to lug a deer to the farmhouse. He always said "That was the old days".

Loved the story of wrestling the deer back down to the ground and calming it with his bowie knife.

The deer meat....we even ate it for breakfast.

Miss him lots!! He always made me smile.

With a 20 gauge? Wow. The article doesn’t describe the actual shot, though, or the load.

One ounce slug leaving the barrel at 1200 to 1800 fps. Plenty for a deer.

That’s some tough meat there...

But finally, a rack that can handle all his hunting clothes.

Very nice...this is one I saw online the other day...the rack is one of the
most bizarre non-typs that I have ever seen.

I use a Savage 20-gauge slug gun...the barrel is rifled and it shoot sabots
chambered in a 3 inch case. Deer just fall over when hit with this round
at 50-100 yards.

Wow! My husband will be envious. Every year he travels south to MO for his annual deer hut with our son at a private game farm where they shoot only 10 points, or above. They didn’t fire a shot this year. Too warm and the super moon kept it too bright over the weekend. He spotted a really large one yesterday, but he was engaged in an antler dues with another buck. By the time they broke apart it was too dark to take a shot. He’s on his way back this morning.

In the mean time, he allows other people to hunt on our land. (It’s only bow season right now.)

FYI: Howard Lake and Waverly are in Wright County, Minnesota. It lies just west a bit from Minneapolis.

In last week’s election, Wright County voted 62% for Trump/Pence and 29% for Clinton/Kaine. In fact, in reviewing the results of the vote on the MN Sec. of State Election results website, the entire state was lopsided for Trump expect the Twin Cities, Duluth area and Rochester/Olmsted county. MN outstate was red at a rate of 55-70% for Trump/Pence.

The hunter is very likely a Trump voter.

He got this thing five miles from my house. Imagine hearing about a local story from Free Republic instead of a local source.
