After Donald Trump won despite losing the popular vote count, liberals everywhere were (once again) demanding an end to the electoral college. Most of it was all talk. After all, how can we possibly change a system that has worked for over 200 years?
Well, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has taken the next step: She is introducing a bill to put an end to the electoral college once and for all.
"In my lifetime, I have seen two elections where the winner of the general election did not win the popular vote," said Senator Boxer on her Senate website. "When all the ballots are counted, Hillary Clinton will have won the popular vote by a margin that could exceed two million votes, and she is on track to have received more votes than any other presidential candidate in history except Barack Obama. This is the only office in the land where you can get more votes and still lose the presidency. The Electoral College is an outdated, undemocratic system that does not reflect our modern society, and it needs to change immediately. Every American should be guaranteed that their vote counts."
While Trump tweeted in 2012 that the electoral college system is a "disaster," he said on Monday that the system, put in place by our Founding Fathers, is fair because it compels presidential candidates to visit smaller states that would otherwise be ignored.
Boxer is expected to put forward her legislation as the Senate convenes on Tuesday.
United States Constitution
Article 2
Section 1
Paragraph 2
Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.
Amendment 12
The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves; they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President, and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President, and of all persons voted for as Vice-President and of the number of votes for each, which lists they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the seat of the government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate;
The President of the Senate shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the certificates and the votes shall then be counted;
The person having the greatest Number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed; and if no person have such majority, then from the persons having the highest numbers not exceeding three on the list of those voted for as President, the House of Representatives shall choose immediately, by ballot, the President. But in choosing the President, the votes shall be taken by states, the representation from each state having one vote; a quorum for this purpose shall consist of a member or members from two-thirds of the states, and a majority of all the states shall be necessary to a choice. And if the House of Representatives shall not choose a President whenever the right of choice shall devolve upon them, before the fourth day of March next following, then the Vice-President shall act as President, as in the case of the death or other constitutional disability of the President.
The person having the greatest number of votes as Vice-President, shall be the Vice-President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed, and if no person have a majority, then from the two highest numbers on the list, the Senate shall choose the Vice-President; a quorum for the purpose shall consist of two-thirds of the whole number of Senators, and a majority of the whole number shall be necessary to a choice. But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.
What does this mean?
If you want to Amend the Constitution you've got to use a:
wait for it...
wait for it...
wait for it...
Constitutional Amendment.
I thought that crazy witch retired.
With all due respect to Sen. Boxer, low-information Boxer probably does not understand the following. Her bill must essentially be a proposed amendment to the Constitution to the states to repeal electoral college.
Barbara’s daughter is/was married to one of Hillary’s brothers, i believe.
Hey Babs, it was the electoral college system that saved this country from rouges like you.
It worked just as the founders wanted.. bummer huh?
I was tooling around on Netflix last night and ran across the Chelsea Handler show from last week, taped after the election. Her guest was none other than Barbara Boxer herself. Though it would be fun watching liberals melting down (it was) so I watched it.
Of course the topic of the Electoral College came up, and she admitted it would take a Constitutional amendment. This means her bill is just grandstanding and will go no where. The media will push it and then hammer talking points about Trump/Republicans blocking or killing the bill, the useful idiot SJW’s will not know different and be, well... useful idiots.
Babs knows full well a bill cannot do it. She also knows what she is doing.
BS Boxer!
Take out the MILLIONS of votes cast by FOREIGNERS and many more multiple votes cast by 1 person, cast by dead people and on and on and she doesn't even get the popular vote!
Maybe someone can send her a copy of a 7th grade Civics book.
She seems to be confused on some issues there.
I guess she wants to inflict on more damage before she leaves
Oh, just shut up and SING, Babs!
Oops! Wrong, ‘Babs!’ Hard to tell the loonies apart when they all use the same name, LOL!
The Founding Fathers were wise in establishing the Electoral College as a way to make sure all of the country would have a say in who is elected President. The Electoral College, as amended, has served the People well and so it should remain.
Is that idiot still here. I thought she was retiring.
And probably someone has beat me to it when I say, You can’t just write a bill to get rid of the electoral college. Its constitutional.
Boxer once again proves she is dumb as a brick.
Just as soon as we have VOTER ID and VERIFICATION.
Dream on idiot!
Actually, if the desired process is one that maximizes the possibility that a single person, by their one vote, can determine the outcome of an election, the Electoral College is it.
I guess she wants to inflict on more damage before she leaves
I guess she wasn’t as popular as she thought she was. She will go down in history. She was here today and oops she’s gone. Yes. I just couldn’t watch her on TV - her or nancy Pelosi.
An utterly moronic notion, which could only come from the sort of intellectual mediocrity the democrats are putting up for office these days.
The puppet’s poopular votes came from the graveyard and the imagination of the DNC. Now they’re going to have a CAIR member running the DNC and they wonder why they lost?
It is part of the Constitution. It would take a new amendment to remove it. That would require a 2/3 majority of states to ratify it. Dream on Barbie.
Gasping for air.
It’s over for her Jan 6.
