Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump -- who said he has a concealed carry permit -- called for the expansion of gun rights Friday, including making those permits applicable nationwide. In a position paper published on his website Friday afternoon, Trump called for the elimination of gun and magazine bans, labeling them a "total failure."
"Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice. The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own," Trump wrote.
It's not a departure from what he's said on the trail this year, though it does mark a shift from a position he took in his 2000 book "The America We Deserve," where Trump stated that he generally opposes gun control but that he supported a ban on assault weapons and a longer waiting period to get a gun.
"Opponents of gun rights try to come up with scary sounding phrases like 'assault weapons', 'military-style weapons' and 'high capacity magazines' to confuse people," Trump wrote Friday. "What theyre really talking about are popular semi-automatic rifles and standard magazines that are owned by tens of millions of Americans."

A democrat socialist Bernie Sanders, or Michele obama will be our next president in 4 years and undo all that President Trump did unless we immediately start work on or get the message to President Trump to :
1. Repeal the 1965 immigration act
2. national voter id to cut democrat voter fraud which is th the millions of votes
President Trump has to change the 1965 immigration act so he can get a 2nd term . 8 Years of Trump = America great for generations. 3 days of Trump and you already see what has done without any power.
The only thing I’ll agree with Obama on... Elections DO have consequences...
The only difference is... This time, they’re GOOD.
I would imagine that Trump has in mind a system like the one for commercial drivers. Since this is a clearly Constitutional issue it is a clearly Federal matter.
I agree that it is possible that Congress will if not watched very carefully, screw it up.
Barriers are already falling one by one but we still have a long way to go and a lot of battles to fight. Hopefully we will see the day when the Supreme Court strikes down the right of states to require carry permits just as they struck down the right to discriminate on the basis of race in hiring, housing and education.
I don’t think we need to have a States right issue taken over by DC like they have done in so many other areas.
Just bypass that and go to Constutional carry. That is where it is headed anyway. We have 11 States already with it plus Puerto Rico.
Check out the animated gif of the country in the trend toward liberalizing our firearms laws.

Last summer we had a family reunion in Jersey. We drove, and it is legal for me to carry everywhere from TX to VA. Not in MD or NJ. In fact, it wasn’t and isn’t even legal for me to possess any firearm in NJ, because I no longer have the FOID card that I once did when I lived in that dark and fascist state.
But I brought my easily concealed S&W J-frame with me anyway, because I wasn’t about to be unable to protect myself and my family on a 5,000 mile trip.
Oh, btw, from NJ we travelled down the coast to FL, including a 2-day stop in the District of Criminals. Carried there, too (though I studiously avoided places with metal detectors), because any consequence beats dead.
Screw all of these places - I can’t wait to see them have legislation that THEY don’t like shoved up THEIR arses. Plus, it will be nice to be formally recognized as legal, and not have to be worried every time a cop looks at me.
Yeah, Michael Moore was right, this election was the biggest FU in history, and I am glad to have played my small role in sending the message.
I don't think you appreciate the "how and why" D.C. has been able to take over so many other areas.
Carry laws are dictated by individual states. Fat chance the rats in NJ will allow any carry rights.
Your #3 would not stand. Actions like that are viewed as punitive and the USSC has thrown out similarly worded laws. See the USSC case Independent Business v Sibelius. The only way to make your #3 Constitutional would be against future funds. But Congress could not threaten to withhold funds already allocated under an existing framework by changing the terms after the fact. But they could tie it to future funding, similar to the way they coerced the states to adopt Common Core.
Trump supported the Assault Weapon Ban. Yea, he did. He’s just a Democrat in disguise - just you wait until he actually wins the election, then he’ll go FULL GUN CONTROL. He’ll be worse than Hillary, yep he sure will.
That’s why I’m voting for McMullan and Wife.
Nope. He paid it lip service and did nothing, like a good establishment servant.
The next step is to REQUIRE CANADA to respect our permits, if they want to continue trading with us.
Now that would be delicious.
Tennessee has reciprocity with many states so once you have your TN permit you can legally carry through almost all the SE US....
Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.
The 2nd Amendment is the primary issue for me when deciding which candidate to support. Freedom, for everyone, can only be maintained if a great number of the People are armed.
Why do you say that?
He also needs to support a Nationwide Voter ID Law for all Federal Offices.
We picked a conservative action hero guys! So proud of my primary vote. We picked a star.
Awesome; but this is PJ Media citing a Washington Post article from September 2015; the phrase “Republican Presidential front-runner” caught my eye and made me alert that this was from the primary season.
