Donald Trump's transition team is preparing for the billionaire businessman to take over as commander in chief, they're ruffling a few feathers along the way.
Scientific American reports Trump has selected climate change critic, Myron Ebell, to lead his Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) transition team.
Ebell, who's the director of the Center for Energy and Environment at the conservative Competitive Enterprise Institute, has been described by Newsweek as a fierce opponent of climate change, which the publisher calls entirely at odds with scientific consensus.
David Goldston, a policy analyst at the Natural Resources Defense Council Action Fund, explained that Ebell's disbelief in climate change would utterly destroy any environmental advances made by the Obama administration:
The Competitive Enterprise [Ebell's employer] Institute has done everything it can politically and through litigation to block any forward movement on climate and to try to harass anybody who is trying to get forward movement.
Trump's controversial pick should come to no surprise, given his harsh stance on climate change:
The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive. Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 6, 2012
Give me clean, beautiful and healthy air - not the same old climate change (global warming) bullshit! I am tired of hearing this nonsense. Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 29, 2014
The backlash Trump's receiving from the left is expected, but some are taking it a step further by petitioning for Ebell to not lead the EPA transition team.
It reads, in part:
Donald Trump has chosen a leading climate skeptic to head the EPA transition. Do not let a man who denies science in the name of profit lead the nation in environmental protection.
The petition needs 100,000 signatures in order to get a response from the White House; it has a mere 1,055 so far.
Other Democrats on social media were just as upset:
Fuck, Trump picks Exxon funded climate denier, Myron Ebell, to head EPA transition https://t.co/UAtF2x1F0a Naadir Jeewa (@randomvariable) November 9, 2016
Myron Ebell, Trumps pick to lead the EPA, is a lobbyist for fossil fuel industry. Think the systems rigged? Ask whos doing the rigging. Darcy James Argue (@darcyjamesargue) November 10, 2016
So it begins. Trumps transition man for the EPA is @myronebell who is one of the biggest climate skeptics around. Good job America. Akash Patel (@ab_patel9) November 9, 2016
Senior politics editor of The Huffington Post, Sam Stein, summed up his thoughts on Trump's controversial pick:
FWIW. we have probably lost the battle against climate change tonight Sam Stein (@samsteinhp) November 9, 2016
Though Newsweek notes Ebell leading the EPA transition team doesn't mean he will definitely have a job within a Trump EPA, his position is undoubtedly a sign of what's to come.
No!
It just feels so weird though... Definitely not used to it. I think I'm going to enjoy it!
The EPA needs to be abolished. Period!
Ever hear of Barry Marshall and Robin Warren? They came up with the theory that many gastric ulcers are caused by a bacteria.
Everybody thought they were crackpots, because settled science. They won the Nobel prize in 2005 for decribing the role of H. pylori in gastric ulcers. And 16 years later there is still some debate over the cause.
I just wish someone would have sewn bunny ears on John Kerry’s arctic suit before all this came down. Really wanted bunny ears again.
Global cooling, global warming, climate change.
It’s nothing more than another denomination of the same reigion.
every piece of legislation repubs pass should include stmts that scotus has no jurisdiction on it. Article 3 allows congress to take laws it passes out of scotus’ review.
Remember when people in FR used to say Trump is a closet liberal? It’s been awhile, but it was said. Nobody is saying that anymore.
Haha! Awesome post.
I am getting tired of writing that I’m not tired of winning yet....its exhausting, hand is cramping up.
No it's not. Neither is it 'extreme', 'far-right', 'racist', 'bigoted', 'hard line' or any of your other arrogant, disparaging, biased, journalistic bullsh*t!
There is a common theme to all the issues Trump _gets_.
End the b___shit!
Global cooling, warming, climate change (whatever the fad of the moment was, is) is just arm-waving and grant-seeking, total and complete garbage.
Cut off their funding and the b___shit stops.
My big question is whether Ebell is an environmental scientist, and thus suited to head the EPA.
There has been a big problem with the leftist demagogues that Democrat presidents tend to appoint. They jump on every leftist pseudo-environmentalist bandwagon, and have no scientific background at all that would enable them to sift through the hooey. Thus, we get these situations where the EPA is trying to ban chlorine (Bill Clinton’s appointee tried this) or ban carbon dioxide, instead of enforcing the clean air and water laws that the EPA is charged with.
No one wants a landscape strewn with factories belching out thick black sooty smoke or streets full of cars bellowing foul blue smoke. No one wants industrial wastes dumped into our waterways. And if the EPA had stuck to these real pollution issues and stayed away from every leftist alarmist fad, there would be no calls to close the EPA.
I sincerely hope that 1) Ebell is a real scientist who understand the issues, and 2) that he downsizes the EPA and brings it back to the mission stated in its original charter.
Interesting thought. What if other countries had to guarantee (and allow us to verify) that they are using pollution control technologies on every factory that builds goods destined for the US? That would help with both pollution and the trade deficit.
I agree with you 111%
I don’t think Ebell -— a non-scientist-— is being considered to head up the EPA. He has been recruited into the transition team which will advise on appointments, hiring and policy.
The mere fact that he is on this *advisory* panel is sending the Usual Suspects into conniption fits.
Ah, I see. I’m sure he’ll make sure that a qualified scientist is appointed, then!
Looks that way with his recent appointments>>.smile
Hitech made perfect sense to me.
