C. Edmund Wright: Reluctant Trumpers and the Turning Point
American Thinker ^ | November 10, 2016 | C. Edmund Wright

As someone who started in political communications by fighting the Clintons way back in 1992, I'll be forever grateful for every single person who voted for Donald Trump in 2016. It matters not to me whether they were early adapting, pedal to the metal Trumpers -- or lukewarm reluctant Trumpers -- or even late-converting Never Trumpers. Each vote counted as one, and Trump needed almost all of them to once and for all rid us of the Clinton machine.

Amen and pass the plate!

Moreover, the future of the Supreme Court, not to mention the nation, is radically more optimistic today, as are the prospects of securing the border, and of ridding us of the cancer of ObamaCare. This is all very good.

For the record, I fit into category B in the scenario above, not joining the Never Trump movement (though I was tempted twice), while never claiming that Trump could not win. I always maintained that Hillary Clinton was capable of losing to anyone, often stating that the IBD/TIPP poll was worth watching, and that the LA Times Daybreak poll's new paradigm was very interesting as well.

And let's be honest, Hillary Clinton losing is precisely what happened, and the numbers back this up. While some were predicting this big tidal wave of 70 million plus Trump supporters, swelling total turnout to something like 140 million voters, that is not at all what took place. Not even close.

So before I get to some effusive praise of Trump, consider this:

Go to the link Fresh Wind provided upthread and read through C, Edmund Wrong’s posting history.
His account has been reinstated, but I wish he had remained zotted.
He was one of the most vicious of the NeverTrumpers.

Trump's continued attacks on Ryan, Ted Cruz, and John Kasich, long after the primaries ended, was just as morally reprehensible as what Mitch McConnell, Haley Barbour, and Thad Cochran pulled in Mississippi against Chris McDaniel.

What planet has this ignorant, arrogant a$$hole been on for the past four months?

typical low turnout Republican unity win ... Trump underperformed ... Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania

This will prove to be a flatly false narrative as a look at what happened in Pennsylvania will demonstrate.

It may be true that many establishment Republicans did not vote for Trump, but Trump did not underperform Toomey in PA. Trump had 2,912,941 votes compared to 2,893,833 for Toomey.

What's more interesting to me about PA is that Trump's vote total exceeded Obama's 2012 total (2,990,274) by 77,333 and exceeded Romney's 2012 total (2,680,434) by a whopping 232,507, or 8.6%.

What also may be a false narrative is that Clinton failed to turn out the Obama coalition. She actually had more votes in Philadelphia (560,542) than Obama did in 2012 (557,024). She had more more than 10% more votes than Obama's 2012 total (251,063 for Clinton to 227,561 for Obama) in Montogomery County outside of Philadelphia. There Trump underperformed Romney (169,903 for Romney to 160,803). It appears the establishment Republicans of Montgomery County who favored Romney would not vote for Trump. In Allegheny County, which includes Pittsburgh, once again Clinton got more votes than Obama (363017 for Clinton to 348151 for Obama) and Trump underperformed Romney (257488 for Trump to 259,304 to Romney).

So Clinton beat Obama's 2012 vote totals in big Democrat centers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Montgomery County, yet statewide she had 145,569, or nearly 5%, votes less than Obama in 2012. For her statewide totals to be less than Obama's while outperforming Obama in the traditionally big Democrat vote centers, Trump had to have converted a significant number of 2012 Obama voters into 2016 Trump voters in the outlying counties. Not only did Trump achieve this, he increased Republican and independent voter turnout for himself. In Lancaster County, a traditionally stalwart Republican County (and where I live), Trump outperformed Romney by 6% (137145 for Trump to 129364 for Romney). I suspect that some of that 6% increase was from the deplorables I stood in line with and who probably did not vote for Romney in 2012.

According to my wife, one of the poll workers at our voting location told her the Amish turnout was triple what they saw in the last election. So the Trump billboards with the buggy pictures seemed to have paid off, as did the calls for drivers to help get the Amish to the polls.

The bottom line is that Trump won Pennsylvania because he increased turnout in the counties outside the big population centers while he also captured the votes of some of the 2012 Obama voters. This most definitely was not a low turnout vote in Pennsylvania.

Have to correct my previous post. Trump’s total was 77,333 LESS than Obama’s 2012 total.

I'm thinking that the 24/7 MSM assault on Trump cost him perhaps 10 million votes."

Good point. In addtion to the MSM assault, add in the establishment. The establishment includes establishment Democrats and Republicans but also includes establishment conservatives. For example, Mark Levin was no longer a Never Trumper on November 1, but one week before the elction, the Never Trump damage was already done...

Mark Levin no longer a NeverTrumper!

Have been listening to Mark Levin for the last hour or so. Am happy to report that our old friend Mark appears to no longer be a NeverTrumper. It appears that he now believes Trump is a lot more of a constitutional conservative than McCain or Romney (well, duh).

Good point. The other false narrative is that C cannot compare national campaigns to local. Rubio ran nationally and lost every state but one and lost his home state. Cruz ran nationally and was destroyed in the last 6 consecutive contests before dropping out. How were these guys going to outperform in a national race when they got destroyed by Trump in the national primary?

The nice thing about being a representative Republic is that a few behemoth Leftist States and their extra votes for Hillary do not take way from the fact that Trump won by 70 or so EVs the way the system the Founders is intended to work. Take out Kalifornia and NY and Trump won it all but the Left is trying to make hay of the popular vote to try to ignore the land-slide mandate Trump got - especially since the People also gave him both Houses of the Congress to work with.

and he got the Amish vote. They traditionally don’t vote, but he paid them a visit a few months back and they voted for him BIGLY.

Trump also went to Scranton and Wilkesbarre on numerous occasions. I think McCain went once in ‘08 and Romney in ‘12 all but ignored PA in the expectation it would go Dem. If Trump listened to C and Mark Levin he would have done as Romney and McCain and all but given up on PA. Trump showed these guys how to win!

Wrong. He has been zotted. The mods made a special addition to his home page and left it up for posterity. His last recorded post was on 2/20/16.

I was reading his posting history and he really went after you hard.
After a couple of tangles with him I decided it was like wrestling with a pig, you only get dirty and the pig likes it.
