How Did Hillary Clinton Screw This Up? For Starters, Her Advertising Was All Wrong
Advertising Age ^ | November 9, 2016 | Simon Dumenco

So where did Hillary Clinton go wrong? Other than, well, being Hillary Clinton -- a widely disliked and distrusted candidate?

Ad Age Editor Ken Wheaton just asked me if I thought Donald Trump's triumph is about "traditional advertising and millions in spending being useless."

My short answer: Actually, no.

My longer answer is that, while Donald Trump obviously benefited from an unprecedented level of free media coverage, which convinced him for much of the race that he didn't need to waste money on ads, in the end Team Trump did, in fact, plow a ton of money into advertising -- and it cunningly, strategically outperformed tone-deaf Team Clinton.

To put that another way, Clinton badly screwed up her ad game.

Excellent point. It’s not all about how much money one spends.

Exactly. And every time that ad of Trump saying “I’m going to bomb the crap out of them” and “I know more about ISIS than the generals” it reminded me of why I like the guy so much. I bet that single ad is a big part of why the last few days Trump pulled even and then ahead.

...the one with little children watching TV and showing Trump supposedly saying bad things...

Funny, coming from a woman who had Miley Cyrus, who young children shouldn't be seeing, and JayZ, who young children shouldn't be hearing, stumping for her.

Her “advertising” was 24 hours a day on multiple network and cable stations. The liberal “main stream media” is not news...it’s 24 hour continuous liberal advertising. And when they need a break from yakking and brainwashing everyone, they run some ads for hemorrhoid cream, prostrate pills, erectile aids, etc. Then they start advertising the liberal agenda again. 24 hours a day. And after all that they still lost.

Kids voted heavily for trump in Middle School and High School elections accross the country. They werent fooled and they watch tv more than all of us.

Wow. I did not know this. With most of us feeling like we had to keep on the down low about our vote for Trump, this is awesome. I've always thought children are born little geniuses and then slowly, over time, ... well, it seems to go away. The two most intelligent and fascinating conversationalists I've ever known were both 12-year-old boys.

Yeah, the summation of her entire campaign theme was basically 'vote for me - because Trump sucks'.

Both this AdAge article and the Zero Hedge article provide great details about how the two campaigns operated. Hillary’s was the traditional consultant bloated expensive political campaign. Trump’s was the lean campaign that leveraged social media brilliantly to ultimately succeed for half the cost. Trump style.

And after all that they still lost.

This makes me smile. Your entire post is completely true. That's why those precious snowflakes are so upset their candidate lost. The brainwashing is relentless and they are susceptible. As we all are. But they're younger so it's much harder to resist. And they didn't have a mother like mine who told me over and over again, starting about when I was eight, that I was being brainwashed in school. It used to infuriate me. But she was right.

I think the article, and all of you, are missing the MAIN REASON that Trump’s support became solidified across spectrum’s.

It was the ARROGANCE and Condescending attitude of Hillary, the Dems, and Media that galvanized Trump Voters to come out in Droves.

The Trump people are just a BASKET OF DEPLORABLES” statement was a coordinated talking point, from the internet, to Facebook, to Major Media and TV.

It was designed to make people think they don’t want to be associated with “Those People”.

Instead, with Hillary’s arrogant and condescending attitude, it came across to the vast majority of undecided as the “Let them eat CAKE!”(horse schit) that got Marie Antoinette’s head cut off.

The Meme Masters on Reddit took the “Deplorables” idea and ran with it, spreading across all of the social media platforms within 24 hours.

A lot of things did Hillary in, but IMO, this was the biggest. It became a rallying cry.

The author raises some good points, but overlooks an important one:

There's a good reason why Clinton's ads were all focused on Trump and his personality. Extensive polling and focus group research conducted by her campaign for months revealed a big problem for her: If she focused on issues, she'd lose badly for a number of reasons (her long track record in government with nothing to show for it, for example). And the research they did showed that the best way to beat Trump was to make the campaign about him, not the issues.

Something else that just occurred to me is that Clinton made one huge mistake in attacking Trump for his personality, demeanor and conduct: she assumed that voters would see this as an attack on his character, but it really wasn't. The anecdote the author gives about overhearing the conversation in a NYC coffee shop is a good example of this.

“she assumed that voters would see this as an attack on his character, but it really wasn’t”

It was right in line with the Media Image and Caricature the Media had already created about him, for twenty years, so it couldn’t gain any traction outside of people that were already set against him.

Yes, you`re right. Truth has a way of shining threw the clutter. And in politics, it gets people`s attention because it`s so unusual.

Amazing. Remember all the whining about getting the big money out of Presidential campaign, and how it was projected that a presidential campaign costs upwards of $1M? Trump just ran the most amazing un-campaign ever. It broke all the conventional rules and defied the experts.
