SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A single mother of six in Northern California is facing potential jail time after selling a bowl of homemade ceviche over social media.
Mariza Reulas was cited by San Joaquin County officials for selling her homemade ceviche, a dish typically made from raw fish which has been cured in citrus juices.
Reulas sold the ceviche through a Facebook group called 209 Food Spot, which she joined a few years ago. She says the group was used for sharing recipes, organizing potlucks and occasionally selling food.
"Somebody would be like, 'Oh I don't have anything to trade you, but I would love to buy a plate,'" Reulas said to KTXL.
Last year, the mother was contacted by someone asking to buy a plate of her ceviche.
According to court documents, that person was an undercover investigator on a sting operation from San Joaquin County. Facebook group 209 Food Spot was under investigation because the majority of the group's members didn't have permits to sell their food.
Reulas and about a dozen other people from the group were cited with two misdemeanors: one for operating a food facility and the other for engaging in business, both without permits.
Of the people charged, Reulas was the only one to refuse a plea deal for three years of probation. Her case is headed to trial, and she could potentially end up in jail.
"It was just, like unreal, that they were saying you could face up to a year in jail," she said.
The deputy district attorney for San Joaquin County, Kelly McDaniel, says selling any food not subject to health department inspection puts the people who eat that food in danger. She says it also undercuts business owners who get permits to make their food.
The 209 Food Spot Facebook group was sent a warning before charges were issued, according to McDaniel.
Every time the public gets a nanny, it turns into Nurse Ratched sooner or later.
The place that was a landmark, would have stayed a landmark had it deserved the distinction and people believed it. If it can be beat out by the porta-taco people it wasn’t that wonderful.
Gotcha and agree on less government.
But you do not want Mexicans with literally 100s of pails of water and rancid meat.
You would love living in Mexico.
i want to gov’t making sure people with tuberculosis are busted before selling me or my daughter food. It’s a big problem here too as we have so many Mexicans.
Where do you live?
Yeah, Nebraska.
Get back to me when you have as many Mexicans running roughshod as we do. You’re simply clueless.
Frankly I wonder if there was more, such as “gang involvement.” That the place got threats that went beyond competition. If I ran such a place, I’d serve things that the porta-tacos could not match, in an atmosphere they could not match. People would gladly spend $60 and up for an evening there. But again that would depend on there not being gang sabotage and attempts to exact la mordida that way.
FEAR the CORN! (Which is turned into tacos, bwahahaha)

How about you and your daughter refusing to buy that food?
Maybe you don’t care if the person preparing your food has TB.
Do you care if the surgeon who is operating is a real doctor?
I’m almost certain you don’t care.
Thank GOD that they are getting the hardcore ceviche criminals off the streets!
If I know there’s a way to choose a better whatever, I’ll use it.
The operative word here is CHOOSE.
People can get over TB and then they can serve each other all their life and never get an iota sicker.
I buy home made products frequently on EBAY... heh heh http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kimchi-Kimchee-Gimchi-Traditional-Korean-side-dish-Gluten-Free-/291910935578?hash=item43f73f641a:g:UJ4AAOSw8gVX~pUN
ROTTEN Cabbage...heh heh
Seems like the authorities would have bigger fish to fry.
Or at least to marinate in lime juice....
And in California, there's a lot of them, all of which were passed by elected officials placed in office by California voters.
Stories like this crack me up. Californians freely chose single-party rule and then they have the audacity to complain about the clearly predictable consequences of their electoral choices.
And you know what the story does NOT say.
It does NOT say the inspectors tested her food and found it to be germ-infested.
The very thing that would seemingly matter the most — they didn’t even CARE about.
And with the Facebook connection — this would be almost the modern equivalent of the old neighborhood block party, at which I guaran-darn-tee ya there aren’t any inspectors.
Back in the day, this would have made a terrific Monty Python sketch.
No. Of course I do not want Mexico, but this stuff goes so overboard that they are harassing children with lemonade stands. Look a the pictures of the ghettos and slums of the early 20th century, particularly in NYC. The streets are filled with vendors. It was their stepping stone into something better. You must understand, the majority of these health laws are political favors for large or corporate business. There is no logical reason to go to barber school, do 2000 hours of near slave work to get a barber license. Can a barber hurt you? Maybe but more than likely, a lack of skill will kill their business. Licensed interior decorators? the list is endless. Look at some of John Stossel’s stuff on this.
“Resistance is feudal!”
Germans were saying the same thing after VE Day.
