They assured each other he had no real shot of winning the presidency. They said he would be an embarrassment to the Republican Party and drag down the rest of the party with him, both in 2016 and for years to come.
To be sure, many arguments of the so-called NeverTrump movement in the Republican Party were based on mere principle. But some were more political pleas that he was bad for the party, electorally speaking, and that Trump-inspired doom lay ahead.
It hasn't happened at least, it hadn't as of the race's final week. Trump appears to be within shouting distance of winning the presidency, and the Republican base is as united in voting for him (87 percent of them are behind him) as Democrats are in voting for Hillary Clinton (also 87 percent), according to Friday's Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll.
In other words: It looks like the NeverTrumpers are leading a movement without a real base. And no matter what happens on Tuesday, they'll have a mess to clean up.

I caught a glimpse of George Will on fox. He couldn’t even bring himself to look in the camera.
They know now that Trump was the only candidate that could go 15 rounds toe to toe with Hillary and her many surrogates.
I think they realize now how much damage they’ve done to the party — not that they really cared for the party.
A “President Hillary” would be a disaster of biblical proportions. She is an unwrapped mummy left over from another age that can’t handle the crisis that are coming.

She facilitated most of those crises. She has plenty more to inflict upon us. POTUS is only her first step. I think she wants to be the next Soros.
I don’t know where you live, but I bet that your instictive dislike of Trump was your reaction to what was nothing more than a TYPICAL New York City personality.
I lived in Long Island, near the city for two terribly LONG years and it took me 6 months to get used to the New Yorkers.
Most I met were good people, kind, family loving, hard workers BUT they were NEW YORKERS.
I believe the last sentence well describes Donald Trump.
“I disagree. It was based on principles. The NeverTrumpers are in two camps...the open borders Romney crowd and the holier-than-thou McMormon crowd.”
Three camps there is the “He’s not a woman and is mean to women PC but conservative (Sometimes) crowd”
Never Trumpers have proved (finally!) that they are nothing but Democrats.
George Will, Bill Kristol and the others... They are dead to me.
If you’ve been listening to Mark Levin the last month, you would know he is far from a Never Trump type.
The Never Trumpers are mosquito like inhabitants of The Great Dismal DC Swamp . They love the swamp, they thrive in the swamp. They are blood sucking vermin.
Technically, you were not a #neverTrumper”.
Seriously, my biggest complaint with #neverTrumpers is that their position is basically superstitious; a declaration that no new evidence, no matter how compelling, will change their mind.
Obviously, you were not guilty of that.
The objections to Trump that I heard (from the republican side) were:
1) he is not a real republican, much less a conservative
2) he isn’t sincere about running, possibly even a spoiler for getting Hillary elected.
3) he is an embarrassment, a clown and has no chance of winning, and he’ll not only lose the White House but drag the down-ticket republicans down with him.
4) he is crude, racist, sexist, homophobic and xenophobic toward other religions.
5) he is reckless, ignorant and confrontational, and would mismanage the economy, cause social divisions, and destabilize military and trade alliances.
I could go on, but the point is that as each of these suspicions was put to rest, a reasonable person would make adjustments, and give credit where credit is due, (as you did).
A #neverTrumper never learns from new information. As Trump began to declare conservative policy positions and then held to them steadfastly, he surprised and impressed many of his critics, - at least those with an open mind.
The #neverTrumpers are by definition closed minded.
I have no quarrel at all with people who originally doubted Trump. In fact it’s admirable to be able to admit you were wrong when presented with the evidence.
Well, I haven’t. He lost me many months ago. Is that my fault?
Wasn't the first Klingon visit before the pyramids were built?
Trumps temperament hasn’t changed a bit in the last 18 months.
“Never Trump was never based on principals. It was based on ego and childish petulance that their their candidate of choice was rejecting by us filthy unwashed peasants out in fly over land.”
I disagree. Never Trump is an act of self preservation of a corrupt, greed filled system of self enrichment via public service. Those are the principles by which they live.
George P against Chelsea Clinton! Who are we going to go for, lol?!
Even Ted Cruz is out campaigning with Pence now.
You are far too charitable. Many never trumpers are nothing more than globalist traitors trying to reinstitute a new feudalism.
We can’t count on the never trumpers having destroyed themselves. We need to help them.
I do not get NeverTrumpers.
If they dont like him, thats fine with me. I understand that. Do they just toss his policies too?
Im actually embarrassed for folks so dumb that they cant grasp Trumps policies are better than Clintons.
It goes beyond that too. Trump is not a crook. Hillary Clinton if found guilty on each count shes going to be facing, could inhabit each cell in an entire long wing of a federal prison.
Yesterday at one campaign event, one well known guy refused to say the name Trump. What he did say was, It is important that we have a Republican in the White House.
Think about that statement. Think about what it really means. Inarticulately he was intimating that McCain, Romney, Dole, Bush, Rubio, Kasich... hey, they’d be okay. They’re Republicans after all.
Trump, with his platform that touches on almost everything we have wanted for decades isnt good enough to even mention his name. Where is the respect for his platform, if not for the man? And if these values mean anything to you at all, dont you respect the man who is willing to implement them?
Whose name is worthy? A Republican! Excuse me, but that translates to a GOPe Republican, and that is exactly what we have tried to overcome this year.
Some folks dont have the tools to grasp what this election is all about, and if they cant grasp what this election is all about, they are not capable of really standing beside us in the trenches and fighting this battle.
And if they are not capable of doing that now, at this critical time, they never will truly be, when the stakes are higher or even the same or less. No backsliding allowed.
NeverTrumpers, you have got to get over yourselves.
Say what you want about Chelsea, she couldn’t be as bad as her mom.
George P on the other hand, will definitely be as bad as any other Bush.
What a dilema.
