Unless circumstances change yet again, the country appears headed toward a close presidential election outcome.
There is a remote but intriguing possibility that few have discussed: a 269-269 tie in the Electoral College.
Very few Americans have the slightest idea of what then would happen next. It is worth explaining, as in this strange election year, we should be prepared for just about anything.

I should have finished my novel from 15 years ago — computer crash. Hillary character has GOP elector run off the road on the way to cast electoral vote. Alternate has been bribed.
Not to worry the Constitution provides for coin flip
Fine by me.
They need to burn.
Twelth amendment says you count on January 6th. The new Congress begins on January 3rd. Not a coincidence.
But the only penalty for faithless elector is a fine.
Can’t be a tie, there are 51 votes. Need 26 to win, not all states need to vote, only 2/3 need to vote, but still need 26 to win.
Electoral vote is in Dec. Votes sealed until Jan.
Time for input from the head shed....ask Zero
No one would have believed it 15 years ago. Now, they would.
Tied at 269, each state delegation in the House gets one vote.
Given that the GOP controls more state delegations than the RATs, a 269 outcome should work out very well for us.
I get what some of you are saying about not trusting our Representatives, and I get it to a point, but they are not going to elect Hillary. There is probably a better chance they would try to elect Johnson, but that isn’t going to happen either.
Maybe we could have a civil war to sort it out.
So, let’s say, after every million casualties, we have another election to see if we broke the tie.
Boo. Thx.
bkmk
The GOP House would elect Clinton as president, Pence as Vice President, and try very desperately to convince us that this was the right move.
A lot of grumbling and then back to our deplorable lives.
Several months ago as I played with the RCP make your own electoral map, without looking at the numbers and just arranging my states, I came up 2-3 times with this scenario.
I never do any more. Now I only get Trump winning, even by a small amount. Maybe it’s all in my head. I know anything can happen. Americans are so misinformed that Hillary could win this. But I am gaining some confidence lately that Trump can pull this off, even with the voter fraud that there will be. Please Gd.
Had the computer not crashed 15 years ago, I think it would have been a compelling story. What the hell, I will give a few teasers because I am not going to write it again. I was about halfway through it. The bribe I had referenced was Hillary have a child killed and harvesting the organs to save an alternate elector’s child.
A week before the election, she blackmailed the VP candidate into resigning and she took his place. She did not have to go through any scrutiny. Then an elector is killed by running him off the road on the way to the state capitol to cast his electoral vote. The bribed alternate steps in, and her team wins the election. She then, of course, has the president elect killed.
Two weeks before the prez elect was to fly into the Palestinian airport, the assassin digs a bunker in the landing flight path and hides under plywood covered in tinfoil, yes tinfoil. His heat signature is not detected by Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) from the helicopters that would be flying around the airport beginning about 12 days before any such trip. The prez elect’s plane is taken down by a shoulder fired missile.
You are right. It would not have been believed then but would be believed now.
Your analysis assumes that they only have Trump and Clinton to pick from.
What about Pence, Ryan, Kasich, McCain, etc...
I could see 26 Republican states agreeing to give it to on of them.
Not only would the Republican delegations come into play but think about a state like Illinois. There are 10 Dem districts and 8 Rep districts. Knowing that at the end of the day, a Republican is going to win, I bet Illinois could be convinced to cast their vote for someone like Kasich or Ryan to avoid someone like Trump or Cruz.
Why do you think they would only be able to choose from Trump, Clinton, Johnson or Stein? What rule says that?
