When FBI Director James Comey wrote his bombshell letter to Congress on Friday about newly discovered emails that were potentially “pertinent” to the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server, agents had not been able to review any of the material, because the bureau had not yet gotten a search warrant to read them, three government officials who have been briefed on the probe told Yahoo News.
At the time Comey wrote the letter, “he had no idea what was in the content of the emails,” one of the officials said, referring to recently discovered emails that were found on the laptop of disgraced ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin. Weiner is under investigation for allegedly sending illicit text messages to a 15-year-old girl.
As of Saturday night, the FBI had still not gotten approval from the Justice Department for a warrant that would allow agency officials to read any of the newly discovered Abedin emails, and therefore are still in the dark about whether they include any classified material that the bureau has not already seen.
“We do not have a warrant,” a senior law enforcement official said. “Discussions are under way [between the FBI and the Justice Department] as to the best way to move forward.”

The FBI is being lynched.
Loretta Lynch will never allow the FBI to get that warrant. The Congress will have to force her to do that, and if she ignores their subpoena, she should be arrested and jailed. These law enforcement hacks are not above the law either.
Lynch is obstructing justice because wants to say AG , D’oh or the Clintons have some really dirty on her ,LOL
None of this matters. The media is already trying to bury this story. CNN is doing stories on the hubris of both Clinton AND Trump. ABC is making Hillary out as a fierce warrior demanding answers from the FBI.
Hopefully FOX will stay on this and keep reporting the details.
Any candidate without a D after their name would already be facing an avalanche of calls from the media to drop out.

If the emails are work related, they are government property. Why would the FBI need a warrant to retrieve government property? I realize it is not that simple if they want to have a solid criminal prosecution (for instance if something is found incidentally in a private email).

While I agree with your complete post, I think post 23 might be onto something too.
Generally that’s standard police procedure and done immediately, copying and backing up the data in case the device fails or someone attempts to tamper with the evidence.
So.....if the four Wiener devices are in the custody of the FBI, and they just haven’t had time to fully vet the 10,000 or so emails they found, why would they need a warrant? If they THINK there are 10,000 emails on a device (or four) in the Wiener household, what’s to prevent Huma or The Perv to throw the devices through a tree-chipper before the FBI knocks on their door? Is this immediately going sideways.....AGAIN?

FBI has not established probable cause. Comey acted on a “recommendation” by his investigation team, based on a trove of emails that “may be pertinent”.
It is unknown whether the FBI even has the emails in their possession.
Lynch is going to stall and argue for 10 days.
She figures that Comey has done enough damage, and fulfilled his moral obligation to Congress and that is as far as she wants it to go.
That may be, however, I'll bet the locals have a warrant.
Or maybe comey is in on this whole thing to get the sympathy vote for clinton.

The column says it’s unknown whether FBI has these things in their possession.
