For more than two hours on Friday morning, much of the web seemed to grind to a haltor at least slow to dial-up speedfor many users in the United States.
More than a dozen major websites experienced outages and other technical problems, according to user reports and the web-tracking site downdetector.com. They included The New York Times, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit, GitHub, Etsy, Tumblr, Spotify, PayPal, Verizon, Comcast, EA, the Playstation network, and others.
How was it possible to take down all those sites at once?

Twitter is still out here on the East Coast as of 1:20 PM.
I’ve been trying to donate to Freep since around 9 AM this morning (PST) and keep getting the message from PayPal that “This site can’t be reached.”
I told Jim I’d try again when I get home @ 3 PM.
Don’t forget to donate to the Freepathon!!
Free Republic is a lot faster today
Bump!
ping
while we still can
Oh and that’s per query. A lot of web sites today are pretty complex and fetch a lot of queries for image subdirs (images.foo.com), script subdirs (scripts.foo.com), CDNs, etc. So yeah it can take a long time. Just be patient and the web page should eventually appear.
doubt it

Mote likely the DNC
ICANN is just a bureaucratic administrative body. They merely set long term policy for TLDs. This attack has nothing to do with them.
Remember this? Why would Russia wait until they are attacked?

I was thinking that as well. Either a test run, or a demonstration.
My guess is that they really, really, really want to close Assange down. And fast.
Years ago I worked for an engineering consultant firm, a crew was in painting the office price meal. One of the cubicals was the dedicated home to the server. The crew put down plastic, it was draped over the server, which caused the server to overheat and slow to a crawl. The president of the company, who has a hot head, was screaming at the painters. No permanent damage though.
The article points out that Cruz’s big worry is that the Dns servers would be shut down. The writer of the article, which is left wing, feels that is nonsense. I put up the article in regards to this mornings shut down and the connection to DNS servers to show it is not.
BenLurkin has invoked the list!
So once again you all should:
For when the INTERNET goes down and quits working completely (Sorta like Congress only funner)I've created a FRee Republic Emergency Ping list (as suggested by mitch5501 ) called:

Jim Robinson runs a really funky DNS custom setup with multiple redirects. It looks homebrew, probably because FR has been DDOSed before (and probably lots of times).
This is probably why FR us running just fine right now. I’m pretty impressed with what he did.
