I live in the wrong part of the country to have much to be upbeat about. I live in one of the lesser liberal areas of California (though still quite left leaning), and I get my choice of two DEM candidates for our House seat. Having to rely on the rest of the country to bail us out give one a feeling of no control over our political destiny.

Republicans in Louisiana used to feel the same way you do. Then Louisiana finally went Republican in a big way, but it turned out the Republicans were too moderate to stop the Democrats from raising taxes and regulating the economy.

It's mostly rural, conservative, with a few moderate cities (Syracuse, Rochester, etc.) but we are completely outnumbered (even if they didn't cheat) by the huge entrenched Democrat machine in New York City. So NY State's electoral votes nearly always end up with the Democrat. Meaning it doesn't matter who I vote for... sort of. In fact I am hoping that this year is different. But who knows.
So you're not alone in feeling out of control.
