With a little more than 24 hours before Florida's voter registration deadline, the state's federal court ruled to extend the deadline Monday.
The final day Floridians can register to vote is now Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The Florida Democratic Party filed suit late Sunday to try to force state officials to extend the deadline for up to a week to allow residents who fled Hurricane Matthew to continue registering.
Governor Rick Scott had refused to allow more time.
Thousands of Floridians fled areas threatened by the storm, and at least a half a dozen deaths in the state have been blamed on Matthew and its aftermath.
The party argued in its lawsuit that minority voters are more likely to register closer to the election, and that voters in parts of the state untouched by Hurricane Matthew will face fewer obstacles to signing up.
As another astute freeper said, if you aren’t registered by now, you have no business near a voting booth.
Amazing. What’s the use of having a government. Just let the courts decide.
The governor should tag every late registration as suspicious.
yet another federal court transgression in that voter registration is properly a matter of state law
Just when I thought that I could not despise the Democrat Party any more, they do something to show me that I can.
Question: why does the federal government have jurisdiction to decide how long voter registration has to go? They don’t set the rules in the first place so how can they step in and change them?
Of course two can play that game. The state could investigate the federal judge. I’m sure it’s (see-gender neutral) broken some law some time somewhere. No excuse. Slam it.
If we allow the Democrat Party to steal this election for Hillary, it is the end of the United States of America as it was once known.
Knew it was coming!
This was my immediate response in the hurricane thread to the governors comment after he said it. I knew without a doubt that Hillary was going to go judge shopping and get the deadline extended. They have so many fake registrations to submit yet.
My understanding of FL law was that only the state legislature could extend the deadline.
Another activist court.
Just guessing, but does Florida come under the voting rights act?
“state’s federal court” ???
I guess it is like Ruth’s Chris Steak House?
The Democrats have volunteers stationed in front of every Walmart, Aldi, Dollar store, etc. signing people up. Yesterday and today I asked each one who they were volunteering for, and all were reluctant at first to answer. All volunteering for Dems.
In response to this ruling all the County Clerk’s should give their offices a long Columbus Day weekend....until, oh about Thursday....
Exactly. Why isn’t it, Ruth’s Chris’ S’teak Hous’e?
Someone tell me where judges were given legislative powers. What part of the Constitution contains such a clause?
Hang the judge.
