Major Hurricane Matthew Briefing Situation Overview
...THIS IS NOW A WORST CASE STORM SURGE SCENARIO...
Catastrophic Damage is Anticipated for Coastal Areas.
Major Hurricane Matthew is still expected to move DANGEROUSLY CLOSE the Florida First Coast and Southeast Georgia Coast Friday through Friday night into Saturday with catastrophic impacts expected along and near the coast.
A major hurricane has not impacted this area in 118 years, since October 2nd 1898. There is NO local living memory of the potential of this event. If a direct landfall occurs this will be unlike any hurricane in the modern era. . The western eyewall is expected to move along a portions of the coast with sustained winds 115 to 125 mph and gusts in the most affected areas! Winds will be higher in high rise structures in Downtown Florida possibly strong Category 4 to Category 5 intensity!
Some of the lowest barrier islands will be completely overtopped with large battering wave and life threatening flooding. Barrier islands are likely to breached and it is extremely possible that new inlets will be cut in the worst affected areas.
Please, Please heed the advice of public and emergency management officials. 40 people in New York and New Jersey did not heed these warning during Sandy and died in the storm surge! This will be a MUCH Greater surge than Sandy had along the New Jersey Shore!
UPDATE
Husband just landed!!!! He was able to reschedule his flight & got the last seat both planes from Chicago!!NOW the long drive home.
News referenced Hurricane Nicole...but said just watching at present. The last I heard is that Matthew has formed a loop with new eye forming within the eye & will travel same route as today.
Apologize for typos. My Mom has Alzheimer and I am typing with one hand
If you are a licensed Amateur Radio Operator or you have a receiver capable of the following frequencies, the National Hurricane Net is now active and seeking reports from the affected areas in Florida on frequencies 7.268 Mhz LSB (Lower Side band) and 14.325 Mhz. USB (Upper Side Band).
I don’t know how far I am from sea level.. and don’t want to find out the hard way! LOL One problem is that we have had heavy rain over 24 hours. nThen the winds are blowing the occean water higher up the St johns River which has flooded some lo areas ij JAX already
Thanks for the link.
As a Floridian, born in Miami 1935, I’ve been through many. Born just after the Labor Day one, that knocked out the Keys. Worked 42 years, Bell System, outdoor, S.Fla...
Today, working through many sites, have yet to find any weather stations reporting sustained Cat 2 or better speed. Have you?
I’m now in Seminole Co. and having one small rain squall, no wind.
Not saying it can’t be bigger but seems to me, it will be borderline 2. I’ll be happy if that is so.
I wish you well and and have quite night, especially if you are in the Southeast.

Buoys in the Atlantic are few. Probably hard to keep up.
The Gulf has the most.
A map for all.
Landfall says it all. I cleaned up Elana in Sept. 1985 and it was a bitch. Gulfport, MS. Tornadoes were rampant during the storm.
I think the Low Country of GA and SC stand to suffer the worst for this one.
Its already happened.
Florida Governor Rick Scott has asked Obama to declare Florida To be in a state of emergency and Obama signed the declaration. Reliance on the federal government helps leftists.
I agree. I wonder if many people know that Rice was a large crop in the wet coastal areas of GA. in 1800s? Maybe even today to a degree?
Same as you...so fl transplant to Seminole county. I think things will get interesting around midnight. Too dang many hardwood trees here.
Your game with LSU Cx.
I’ve been down there recently and a 9ft storm surge would devastate the area. I was at Dataw Island, SC.
Sandy was one of those weird Category 1’s that for whatever reason did a stupid amount of damage.
I can’t recall how well formed it was or whether or not it was strengthening when it came inland, but every now and then the smaller storms deliver.
There was a tropical storm that hit New Orleans just before Katrina came, it was named Cindy, and that one was also pretty darn scary.
The sound the wind made as it came up the streets in Uptown is not something I will forget.
I was sitting out on the porch for this a bit listening to this, and I was watching trees bend all the way to the ground in the shape of an upside down U. It was like the sky just sat on them.
Some of the sights and sounds of Cindy is was made me leave the city as soon as I saw Katrina incoming. Wasn’t even gonna mess around with that. Got my friends and family out the night before the city and suburbs all tried to leave at once, got gas, no traffic, even got two hotel rooms in Florida that allowed dogs, so I thank Storm Cindy for opening my eyes for Katrina.
It feels like a "Stay of Execution."
Unless you get an EF-4!
This isn’t God’s doing.
Right?!
LOL! The wait may help.
