You do have a bit of a point, but it's not merely just joke degrees — I know many STEM-types, especially in programming, and the prospects aren't great. Part of the problem is that there's a widespread aversion to training in [tech] companies, part of it is the widespread H1B visa fraud, and part of it is "maintaining the narrative".
All three are related: (1) the companies put out ridiculous job postings [like 10-years experience for entry-level jobs, experience with their exact set-up, lower than expected wages, and other such]; (2) companies seem to view training as a pure expense, not an investment [this ties to the requiring of experience w/ their exact set-up]; (3) the companies then use the failings of #1 & #2 to justify requesting H1B visas; (4) importing H1B visas, who will accept lower wages, further depress the market-value of the jobs allowing them to post lower salaries in #1; (5) all of which is painted as America has a big lack of STEM workers!

After all, we've had a Republican majority of Congress for how long? And control of the House of Representatives for how long? How strong have they stood on things like fiscal responsibility? Their promise to repeal ObamaCare? Government accountability? — How strong has the Republican opposition
to Democrat/Obama agenda actually been? Wouldn't vigorous yet near-incompetent opposition have had more results than what we've seen?
What you said is very true. And I think the RNC has missed many, many opportunities over the past 2-3 elections to illustrate the long-term economic consequences of the liberal tax-and-spend agenda. Trump is sort of trying to communicate this, but needs to do a better job.
Statistics such as debt per person, debt per household, debt per TAXPAYER, etc. need to be thrown out there frequently. Someone has to get through to the millennials that it is not “someone else”, who is going to pay for these things, it will be THEM and THEIR CHILDREN.
I always thought that Newt Gingrich did a good job explaining things in this subject area.

Local markets (philly area) have opening for tech jobs. I’ve been a reference for a number of college grads who interned with my company.
But in other areas of the country, I’ve heard the job requirements or salary offered are intended to target H1Bs or other non-domestic labor.
I think it’s a regional thing, however. And if there were stricter rules about allowing foreign labor into the US workforce, geography would start to drive opportunity.
Seems no one is willing to relocate anymore. Used to be that was the primary reason people DID relocate.
Matter of fact I got into an argument with one a week ago, the day SSI checks came out, long line at the TD bank in Portsmouth on Lafyette rd near the homeless shelter, a lot the people in line were homeless, a lot of them scruffy smelly bums getting their SSI. I knew some of them since my wife and I donate to the place and help them get jobs or go someplace else.
Anyway, this bum who I knew there was in line, he's like in his mid twenties and got kicked out last month for being intoxicated and camps out near water country smoking weed and he was telling his buddy that Trump and the republicans were losers because they couldnt find work under Obama. (He works at Labor ready BTW. Gee, what an accomplishment!) He said Obama was doing a good job, the economy is great, only losers couldn't find work so they vote Trump.
I asked him why the same rules don't apply to Bush who during the middle of his reign had lower unemployment than Obama, why people are bad and stupid unemployed under Democrats instead of Republicans and why he was living in a tent working at Labor ready and getting SSI if things are so great under Obama, he told me that it was Bush's fault and that he was fine. Really? I asked, he then told me that he didn't want to work unless he had too. He gets SSI for being Bipolar so he doesn't have to worry he says.
But all the people who lost their jobs under Obama according to him either are stupid or it was because of Bush.
Go figure. I asked him if I could buy him a greyhound ticket to California (and have one less pest in my hometown) he told me no. He owes people money there. Hmmmm.... I wonder who these people could be.
Note to Millennials: if you vote for Hillary you are voting to stay in the basement... with little or no chance of escape.

I am hoping that if Trump wins and is somehow able to improve the economy that this will have a positive effect on the millenials as far as their political views. As a kid who saw what the 70’s were like (graduated HS in ‘82)opposed to what the 80’ were like and it’s effect on my political beliefs (along with my dad and some friends)I saw the stark contrast of everything sucking and everything being awesome in the 80s and that made me a Reagan conservative for life. Hope that wasnt too convoluted. Seeing it work first hand makes you a believer.
Millennials need to figure out that our economy is built on free market capitalism and individual liberty. Both opposed by the Marxist democrat party.
I have nephews who think the violence in the Mideast is caused by climate change and trickle down means economic injustice.

Problem with relocating is:
1) the high expense of housing.
You are a Philly guy. If you got a job offer to go to San Diego, guess what the difference in housing cost would be? a 20 to 25 % raise would not offset the higher costs. Same is true in Boston, or Washington DC, two of the hotter tech areas.
2) Laws.
Lets say you are a tech guy that likes guns: DC, CA, NY, NJ, IL, MA, CT, MD and HI are off limits to you, regardless of what fine offer they give you. Likely applies to other areas as well.
3) Multicultural population
Used to be there was one rather broad middle class culture that you could more or less adapt to in the US. No more. A lot of people in PA like the English-german-Scot conservative culture and do not want to move to someplace hip-hop, or Indian, or liberal, or Mexican dominated. Simple fact is diversity means fragmentation and fragmentation means you sty where you are welcome and stay out of areas you are not welcome or do not share the basic assumptions of .

Millennials are the screwed generation because they’ve seen wealth in their younger years and now can’t attain a fraction of it; never mind homes, many can’t afford to maintain & insure a used car. Uber is a reflection of the “new normal”: carbuyers who need to “share” the car to make payments, catering to the growing number of people without cars of their own...
