Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, with iminent and sustained impacts to U.S. mainland. Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for all of Florida and disaster operations are activated. More than 1.5 million Floridians reside in current evacuation zones. Governor Scott has spoken with utilities across the state to ensure utilities are pre-positioned and there are no unmet needs. Multiple coastal hospitals have been evacuated. Meanwhile, feckless President Barack Hussein Obama is personally monitoring the progress of the storm.

"Removing emergency personnel in an emergency? Im sorry but thats just not right. There are storm shelters for this purpose." That snippet didn't really give the full story. The usual policy now is that once winds get too dangerous, then 911 calls will have to wait until conditions become safe again. Until then, yeah - the first responders will be hunkered down.

That's why they're evacuating.....they need the rescue personnel AFTER it passes to rescue people that couldn't make it out.

Mandarin is a beautiful area....I visited there.....I have family members in Duval Cty. about 15 miles from the ocean. They're staying put because they have Hurricane resistant home and he put metal shutters up today. I've stayed in touch several times today....they're well prepared for whatever comes and can hold out for 4 weeks if necessary..even longer.

For mobile users (iPad, Apple, etc.) I’ve found MyRadar is an excellent app. Gives a great time-lapse view of changing conditions and options include warning/watches overlays. It is easy to change distances (finger use) and focus in on a particular location. Some functions are extra, including hurricane tracking (which I haven’t subscribed to) but the basic app provides the occasional user good info and for us in heavy hail, tornado country the color and outline shows us when to take shelter. A very good app for use with NOAA radio warnings and when a TV isn’t nearby.
For the current hurricane, I’ve been watching the eye as it passed west of Nassau and now moving to southwest of Freeport.

Gov. Scott press conference...sounds like he has received reports that a lot of people aren’t evacuating. His tone sounded a little bit exasperated. Kind of like dealing with my mother and her stubborn husband, times tens of thousands. Eeesh.

NautiNurse, does this mean:
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center and TS force winds extend outward up to 160 miles.
60 miles and 160 miles out from the eye (in other words, those numbers of miles out from the eye in all directions), or just across the eye so it would mean total number of miles?
I hope I explained my confusion clearly. :-)

So the hospital has now declared its disaster plan and we are totally evacuated and self sufficient -- I can see the Daytona speedway from here and it is very ominous looking just beyond. Calling for 11 foot maximum storm surge underneath 25 - 40 foot waves -- that is a lot of water. Possible sustained of 130 here in and around Daytona -- it is like sitting under the sword of Damacles -- this thing is coming unrelentingly and we are just sitting here waiting for come what may.
We are ready and all are safe at the moment -- I love the system I work for because the operational meeting started with a prayer - as every meeting begins. We will get through this. Its game time!

Removing emergency personnel in an emergency? Im sorry but thats just not right. There are storm shelters for this purpose. No, what would not be right would be to expect emergency personnel to risk their lives for idiots who refused a mandatory evacuation notice. Actions have consequences, and sometimes those consequences are harsh.
The emergency personnel will be available after the storm to remove bodies.
