Philippine leader tells Obama 'go to hell', says can buy arms from Russia, China

Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday told U.S. President Barack Obama to "go to hell" and said the United States had refused to sell some weapons to his country but he did not care because Russia and China were willing suppliers.

In his latest salvo, Duterte said he had lost respect for the United States and railed at its concerns about his bloody war on drugs, calling his critics "fools" who could not stop him carrying out a campaign that has killed more than 3,400 people in just over three months.

In a tangential, at times profane speech in Manila, Duterte said the United States did not want to sell missiles and other weapons, but Russia and China had told him they could provide them easily.

"Although it may sound shit to you, it is my sacred duty to keep the integrity of this republic and the people healthy," Duterte said in his second of two televised speeches on Tuesday.

"If you don't want to sell arms, I'll go to Russia. I sent the generals to Russia and Russia said 'do not worry we have everything you need, we'll give it to you'.

"And as for China, they said 'just come over and sign and everything will be delivered'."

His comments were the latest in a near-daily avalanche of hostility toward the United States, during which Duterte has started to contrast the former colonial power with its geopolitical rivals Russia and China.

A lot of people think it’s impossible to get rid of drugs. It isn’t. It’s actually pretty easy to get rid of drugs. It just isn’t pretty.

At some point, it becomes a time of choosing. Society either legalizes these things, or decides to eliminate all of the people involved in the trade. The US seems to be choosing option #1. The Philippines are choosing option #2.

I think they are smarter than us.

"None of you live there ... you don't know"

I have about a year on the ground in the PI, over a 10 year span.

I've been from Cebu to Baggio and just about every point in between.

What I believe to be true is that the military/security apparatus in in the PI will take this guy out.

The Philippines could be our greatest ally in SE Asia - but we’d rather not have that, since it would maintain the sphere of influence of the US in Asia. And hey, we’re not an exceptional nation according to our current President.

I pray for a Trump win - I believe relations with the Philippines will dramatically improve. It’s the only SE Asian country where English is one of the official languages. Where we have a century of history with the nation. Where the US overwhelmingly looked upon favorably by the general populace.

A perfect ally - and President Obama doesn’t want to be that ally.

I agree. Singapore did a pretty good job with Option #2, also.

I don’t think the Philippines would go to China for aid. China has been arming an ongoing insurrection in the Philippines for decades, and with their territorial disputes I don’t think China is a real option. Russia, however, is. I’ve watched this happen in Latin America, with Venezuela and Nicaragua, and Honduras hanging by a thread after Obama refused to provide maintenance on the F-5s the US provided for Honduras’ air force. The only thing keeping Honduras on the plantation is Obama’s threat to cut off foreign aid if they accept Russian help. Obviously this is not a viable threat for Duterte.

Tropical climate with jungle terrain? I’d go to the Russians too since American manufacturers can’t make a decent AKM rifle in 7.62x39mm at a good price.

Yeah you need that chrome lined barrel there.
I love Magpul, but even their plastic magazines are a beech to seat in an AK. Eastern bloc steel mags are the way to go.
In any event the AK is just a semi-auto “submachinegun on steroids.” (?Patrick Sweeney)

The best thing about Zer0’s presidency is America’s regained respect.

No greater evidence of that new respect than that offered by President Duterte. At least, Duterte is a President and not a Pres__ent.

You really need that big 7.62 bullet punching through the jungle. The 5.45x39 and 5.56mm are too light. And a piston system is far better than DI in harsh environments, especially with soldiers that likely don’t care much for maintenance.
