An element of intrigue has been added to the investigation of the explosion of SpaceX rocket on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral last month. The Washington Post, quoting unnamed sources, says SpaceX is investigating the possibility of sabotage in the mishap, which destroyed the rocket and its payload, an internet-beaming satellite being deployed by Facebook. According to the story, SpaceX sent investigators to a building owned by competitor United Launch Alliance about a mile from the launch pad because it noted something odd on the roof of the building in still images taken from video shot at the time of the blast. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has also spoken about the investigation taking some strange turns, particularly where it concerns a mysterious noise heard just before the rocket blows up. Particularly trying to understand the quieter bang sound a few seconds before the fireball goes off, he wrote on Twitter. May come from rocket or something else.

Most videos of the explosion are from a distance, and the image of the explosion occurs about 12 seconds before the sound reaches the microphone.
This is a video of the explosion, with the audio shifted so that it syncs with the image:

The "quieter bang" occurs between 1:06 and 1:07. The first visual indication occurs at 1:12.
One suggestion has been that the "quieter bang" is actually the sound of the explosion propagated through the ground, at a much faster speed than through the air. I don't know enough about the different propagation rates to know if that's a reasonable explanation.
What’s Bezos’ alibi?
Implication of sabotage adds intrigue to SpaceX investigation
.50 cal sniper fire from ULA’s roof? Anybody know the whereabouts of Jason Bourne?
Naw — nobody in this Obama administration will lift a finger to look.
There were several astute FReepers who suggested at the time that the low bang was a shot of some sort (I thought it was the guy putting down his coffee cup)
I don't think it was local noise. The reverberation indicated something more distant.
Guess Bezos neglected to send his “donation” to the Clinton Global Initiative.
The corruption is not limited to our political and intelligence systems.
there’s no proof but I don’t find this impossible with so much at stake.
Maybe the first small explosion was internal to the rocket and not big enough to show signs externally.
A Facebook satellite?
Well, then maybe it is a good thing that it blew up!
My very first look at the video suggested sabotage as well.
You cant tell me that this is the ONLY camera footage of the explosion.
That’s my thinking on that too. Nothing good and free would have come from it, IMO.
.50 cal not needed (thought it would definitely do the trick). Pretty much any scoped rifle firing a centerfire round (well, maybe not 5.56.... :^)) would probably do the trick. A mile is nothing, and the target is really large wth many vulnerable points.
Wow.
Just wow...
Sabotage? Was it Trump, or George W Bush’s fault???
