Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, and we await the long anticipated sharp turn northward. Jamaica is completing final storm preparations. All interests in the Eastern U.S. and Bahamas should be carefully watching the track of Mighty Matthew.
Ripped straight from the NHC Discussion page:
Matthew remains south of a low-to mid-level ridge over
the western Atlantic. The dynamical models forecast this ridge to
weaken over the next 72 hours as a mid- to upper-level trough develops
over the Gulf of Mexico. This evolution should cause Matthew to turn
northwestward after 24 hours and northward by 48-72 hours. The guidance
generally agrees with this scenario. However, there is a spread between
the GFS forecast of landfall in Jamaica and eastern Cuba and the ECMWF
forecast landfall in southwestern Haiti. The guidance becomes more
divergent after 72 hours.

Sure hope the area fares ok. I will be obsessively checking this thread until it’s all over. Great links from people. I’ve bookmarked the Melbourne twitter page. My FIL (and his lady friend) DO have hurricane shutters and s generator so we’re not supposed to worry. “We’re fine!” Ugh.
That’s the plan...bizarre but it’s happened before.

Wow...thanks. I don’t recall Betsy, must’ve missed following that one.
Geeze....
BTW good to post with you SE Mom. I’ve been away for a while....good to be back freepin’.

Going to get pretty intense here in next couple of days.

good luck to everyone.
if you are in the path of Matthew.
it might be helpful if you take two old credit cards
and put them in your shoes.
It is stunning. But if you just need to call it in to stay ahead or even in the polls, then why do more?
ok, I’ll bite. What good can come from two old credit cards inside a pair of shoes?
To identify the bodies.

Looks like cat 3-5 the whole time too.
Yep. You are exactly right. They're evacuating almost 3 days before the storm is expected to hit in Florida and South Carolina. What's the common denominator? Both Florida and S.C. have Republican governors. In Katrina, both the governor of Louisiana and the mayor of NOLA (Chocolate Town) were Democrats. Bush begged them to evacuate and threatened to withhold federal funds and by the time they started evacuating it was too late. And they still blamed Bush. And 0bama will get nothing but praise this time.
Hey, NautiNurse - I just want to say thanks for maintaining these threads. I have found them to be a lot of help over the years. I’ll be riding this one out in the same Winter Park house as I rode out Charley, Frances, and Jeanne in 2004. Hope it’s a lot less than it looks like it will be. Stay safe, everyone.
Man this sucker is getting tighter...damn.
I convinced my friends and family, or those who would listen, to get out starting that Friday night. My friend, whose house was underwater from the storm surge alone, appreciated the warning. Even a novice like me could see what would happen. But the Dim hatred blinded them to saving people.
In spite of improving sat pic, the Cuba/Haiti hangover idea worked well. Still not below 960 mb but deepening about to start
Prayers sent to the folks in Florida, including some family members.
Incredibly dangerous and stupid for the Florida Gators not to move the LSU football game this weekend. Absolutely crazy to endanger lives and not make a decision to secure the safety of the fans and players.
I’m hoping LSU forfeits tomorrow rather than go along with this.
Almighty buck rules sports on all level these days.
My Dad, Freeper Ax, is going to ride it out in Boynton Beach, which is in Palm Beach county..
