The waters off Miami Beach are clear of rocks, shoals, etc.
Must have crashed into the Government Cut rock jetty.

Jose Fernandez -the NL Rookie of the Year in 2013 - came to the United States by boat as a 15-year-old Cuban refugee in 2008. Along the way, he rescued his mother, who had fallen overboard. However, his beloved grandmother, who Fernandez calls a baseball freak, was left behind.
Shes the love of my life... my everything, Fernandez said.
The day before winning the Rookie of the Year Award, a shocked Fernandez was reunited with his grandmother in Florida with help from Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria.

Boating is not an activity you partake in at 3:00 am in the morning... Unless one of you is loaded drunk.
Sad, but true. Not sure who changed the pitching rotation, but as fate would have it that was what sealed his fate. Then again, lliving reckless can catch up to you at any moment.

Fernandez, a star young pitcher who was initially scheduled to start in the Sunday game, had that start pushed back to Monday so Adam Conley, returning from the disabled list, could start. This item isn't really correct. They pushed Fernandez back to Monday because the team has had a simmering dispute with the New York Mets over the last few years, and the team wanted to do as much damage as possible to the Mets' playoff standing by having their ace pitch against them.

Boating? At 3:00 am? In the middle of the season? The day before a scheduled start???

Reminds me of the Cleveland Indians boating accident during spring training about 25 years ago when I was still a kid. Tim Crews (I think) and another pitcher were killed and Bob Ojeda had his scalp ripped off but lived. They were drunk as hell.
Bad way to go, RIP

I saw the pic. It was the jetty. Boat was sticking straight up in the air. Looks like they caught the end of the jetty.

He was a righty. His slider was filthy. RIP with no RISP.
