Ervin explained in her Facebook post that on September 19, "while in uniform, I made the conscious decision to not stand for the Star Spangled Banner because I feel like a hypocrite, singing about 'land of the free' when, I know that only applies to some Americans." Ervin said in the post that she was punished by Navy officials and that the "equipment I need to do my Naval job" was taken away.

I spent two years in my early / mid twenties working outside the US. I first experienced South American strongmen / caudillos in Argentina and Ecuador. Chile had dumped Allende and had Pinochet. I got to communist China two weeks after Mao had died.
You are right. There is NOTHING like spending two years of your life in some backwards despotic / tyrannical places to make you appreciate the good old US of A.

Go to the brig for a serious crime, eh? Guess being drunk coming aboard ship after leave is a serious crime? I know the wretch that sold his car to 8 people took their money is not a serious enough crime as he was never investigated when his chief was told. The subsequent beating he got put those who beat him so he spent time in the infirmary for the next month yielded the person brig time. This woman needs brig time as not standing for the national anthem is a serious crime. For an O6 to say that this is not is an O6 I would salute but would never respect. A serious crime is not saluting the flag, not standing at attention when outside for the raising and lowering of the flag and not standing for the national anthem. You are fighting for this country, the flag is the symbol of this country when you are away from it. You disrespect the flag you disrespect the country and have no business in the military. Its okay her career is over no matter unless pansy azz 0bummer butt plugs let her by with a slap on her wrist.

It is not a "crime." Yes, it is corrosive of good order and discipline, and the failure to stand when told - I am presuming that a direct order was given here - is disobedience of a direct order.
I am presuming that this was a first offense. And brig time for a first offense of this nature is somewhat over the top. There are ways you deal with first offenses of that kind. First, you tell her chief petty officer that it is his/her job to get her in line. Extra duty, etc. If there is a second offense, more of this, then it gets more serious and escalates rapidly. It can escalate very rapidly.
But the goal is to instill firmness, discipline and guidance. Not destroy someone's life for a momentary lapse of judgment with no real adverse consequences except the worry that you cannot let this kind of behavior continue.
You must REALLY feel like an a**hole knowing that you could be sent at any time to die for the country you hate so much. I guess even the Navy can't fix stupid. You need to get out of the Navy. You have no business being there.
Bust her one rank and assign her to a fleet oiler.
If this was a second offense I would second that action.

At 5 pm on any military bases, time stops as all servicemen honor the flag lowering. As a civilian, I was confused the first time I saw all the cars stopping and the soldiers hopping out to stand at attention. I guess Ervin didn’t get the memo.
