The essence of human freedom, of civilization itself, is cooperation: cooperation between friends and family; businesses and customers; entrepreneurs and employees.
History and human experience teach that humans cooperate best when they do so voluntarily, without government coercion. That is why I fully support the eventual transition of control over the internet from the Department of Commerce and to a private entity.
But I also worry that President Barack Obama is hastily rushing the current transfer of power to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which could make it easier for the United Nations to take over the internet.
Today, the internet is so vast and ubiquitous that it is hard to imagine it existing in any other form. But for the first few decades of the internets existence, the basic roadmap for navigating the internetthe Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), the system that allocates and records the unique numerical addresses to computerswas managed by just one man on a voluntary basis.

LOL I did not know we have an “Editorial” Sidebar...I was looking at breaking news.
This week will be heating up....On Wednesday, Sean Duffy, GOP Rep from Wisconsin, will be updating on his Facebook and his website regarding the Internet Giveaway and the bills being introduced to stop it.
What can be done is call Senators and Congresscritters and ask them to VOTE FOR THE PROTECTION OF INTERNET FREEDOM ACT. Hoping for vote this week or next...
HOUSE BILL HR5418 WILL BE READY FOR A VOTE...WE NEED TO CONTACT OUR CONGRESS REPS TO SUPPORT THE PROTECTION INTERNET FREEDOM ACT, HR5418.
SENATE COMPLEMENTARY BILL IS SB3034.
KEY IS GETTING IT VOTED ON THIS TERM. I WILL BE CONTACTING MY REP AND SENATORS ASKING THEM TO VOTE FOR THESE BILLS.
I ALSO WILL BE CONTACTING RYAN AND MCCONNELL OFFICES
The bill prevents ICANN from going outside of US and sensures that the .GOV and >MIL extensions will remain under US control....
IF Obama and Zuckerberg types want this transfer to globalists, it clearly is not going to protect my freedoms.
Why would you want control of what was created with US tax dollars to be given to globalists?
So what effective action can be done prior to Sept 30?
What can Congress do at this point, especially if Obamas pen and phone are in action?
I am happy to call my senators offices, but what would I say? Im not going to suggest impeachment - Ill be written off as a nut job.

What can you do?

Will they think you a kook? Well, I called Senator Kirk’s office and they said they were getting calls on this, so must be a few of us kooks out there ;)
Now that there are specific bills and a name, Protection of Internet Freedom Act, it is easy to call and ask that this be voted on before the session ends and to vote in favor of those bills.

A precursor to giving something away is a demonstration of ownership.
Does the United States own the internet?
I dont think we do.
As such, how is it ours to give away?
We are the last beacon of what remains of free speech. Do you seriously think that the UN, which has countries on board who wish to ban hate speech (Sweden, for one.), will care about our First Amendment rights?
People are so concerned about protection of Second Amendment Rights...They ought to be protecting our First Amendment rights—after all, it is the First Amendment—Why should we be complacent about ANYTHING that Obama wants to transfer to Globalists?
Copyright claims by website owners mean nothing if a globalist community declares it ‘hate speech’ and via their contract with ICANN they can force the ICANN branch in their country to knock down a website.
— EVEN websites in the US.
>>>> In fact, ICANN even refused to offer any legal protection for .gov or .mil sites

Why would they be unwilling to even make that assurance?
Exactly — it was not the Second Amendment that made the NRA powerful — it was the FIRST AMENDMENT.
And we had been a great help to the NRA, people on this forum and Drudge and blogs that keep pointing out statistics and logic.
Without internet freedom the NRA would have had a much tougher time.

I believe the internet should fall under free speech protections!
And this is an anti-trust issue as well. Utilities are monopolies.
ICANN is one of the largest utilities on earth.
Paul Rosenweig:
“Without that check, ICANN risks becoming an unregulated monopoly with no effective outside oversight and control.”

Thanks guys for all the info and help, appreciate all your input!
I started an ICANN ping list only one person signed up so far and did so anonymously. I cant bury the name.
So ... I guess Lee is too fringe as well as Senator Sessions and Grassley.
LOL Lee, Sessions, and Grassley are NOT fringe in my book.
As I understand it, there are 6 sponsors for SB3034 so far.
There are approx 30 sponsors for HR5418
The rest of the sponsors are on Congress.gov, and I will try to find and post those names later :)
Thank YOU for posting this!!
God bless you for your optimism. I hope they do win. And I’ll try to quit ‘sounding’ so gloomy.
So far as I’m concerned we’re on Bunker Hill. We are going ot unload our political ammo until we run out. And if we lose this hill, we keep at it.
FRegards ....
Back to Senator Mike Lee.
He lays out a solid easy-to-understand argument and then he make it clear:
“If we rush this transition and ICANN fails, it will be nearly impossible to get the internet back from the authoritarian regimes that are pushing for more control.”
[That is completely at odds with people who try to assure us that all would be well with this transition.]
[snippets]
“But some governments do not like ICANNs current hands-off approach to internet regulation. They want more control over how internet traffic is managed and what domain names are allowed to exist.
“If we rush this transition and ICANN fails, it will be nearly impossible to get the internet back from the authoritarian regimes that are pushing for more control...”
[snip]
” ... I am working closely with Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and other senators to delay the final transfer of internet governance to ICANN. There is no reason this transfer has to happen this year. There is no reason not to allow ICANN to work through its new governance structure on a trial basis for two years so we can make sure it will run smoothly and in a truly independent manner.
“If we rush this transition and ICANN fails, it will be nearly impossible to get the internet back from the authoritarian regimes that are pushing for more control.
“That is simply not a risk we can take.”
— Senator Mike Lee
Bump, thanks!
