The 17 was unconstitutional right out of the gate. First off it was a progressive ram through in a hay day of progressive.
...and the rammers forgot to change the term of office to that of popularly elected representatives. That term is two years not six. If States had any spine or balls, they would begin the transition to Legislature selected Senators who look out for the State rather than themselves. Who do you suppose would stop them and how?
The Senate would stop them, by not allowing them to be seated. How many States would then think an Article V would be the next step in the move for repeal of the seventeenth? You might have to convince the States that the status quo is not in their interest. A difficult task I submit, as they work hand in glove with the Federal Government for political and economic power over their citizens.
