Get ready for a close encounter: A large asteroid will come TEN times nearer to Earth than the moon today
Asteroid will come within a distance of 24,800 miles (40,000 km)
The 32ft-long asteroid will pass by Earth today at 18:12 BST (13:12 ET)
A huge 200-foot asteroid is also set to pass us by on 17 September
[Snip] The space rock is predicted to whistle past our planet at 31,000 miles (50,000km) per hour, on September 17.

And if you recall, that particular object was closely followed/in tandem with another noted asteroid that came basically along the same path.
So my point is ANYTHING in space can have trailing/leading objects that we don’t know about. At least until we are hit!

True, but I don’t think they ever got an accurate count on the number of fragments produced by the Chelyebinsk asteroid. It exploded something like 20 miles above the earth’s surface when it entered the atmosphere. The estimated size was about six times the current asteroid passing close to the earth and it was nearly impossible to sort out which impact fragments originated from trailing objects and which from the asteroid itself.

But what would it mean for math to be twice as easy for some people?

Which is it? The article says 32 ft, then 200 feet.
As for the ten times nearer, that sounds like a Britishism.

OIC. Never mind. It’s 32 feet, which does sound that big.

George Bailey: What is it you want, Mary? What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word and I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it down. Hey. That's a pretty good idea. I'll give you the moon, Mary.

What side of the planet? Dark or light? I am currently in the Eastern time zone.At 32 feet, would it reflect enough sunlight to be seen?
Sputnik at 22.8 inches in diameter was just barely visible with the naked eye at night in underpopulated areas with no city glare to obscure it.
