(CNN Money) Problem: Most Americans don't believe the unemployment rate is 5%
CNN Money ^ | 9-6-2016 | Heather Long

Posted on 09/06/2016 10:01:08 PM PDT by tcrlaf

Americans think the economy is in far worse shape than it is.

The U.S. unemployment rate is only 4.9%, but 57% of Americans believe it's a lot higher than that, according to a new survey by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University.

The general public has "extremely little factual knowledge" about the job market and labor force, Rutgers found.

It's another example of how experts on Wall Street and in Washington see the economy differently than the regular Joe. Many of the nation's top economic experts say that America is "near full employment." The unemployment rate has actually been at or below 5% for almost a year -- millions of people have found jobs in what is the best period of hiring since the late 1990s.

But regular people appear to have their doubts about how healthy America's employment picture is. Nearly a third of those survey by Rutgers believe unemployment is actually at 9%, or higher.

Republican candidate Donald Trump has tapped into this confusion. He has repeatedly called the official unemployment rate a "joke" and a even "hoax."

General gist of the CNN article.

Only STUPID PEOPLE think unemployment isn't less than 5%, thanks to Obama and the Democrats!

ONLY STUPID PEOPLE believe their own eyes, and not our propaganda!

File under:

You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all of the time and you can't ride a bicycle to Europe

Its true - I swear.

After nearly eight years of control by Obama commissars, there is virtually no Federal statistic that is reliable or truthful. Yet as it was in the Soviet Union, the people inherently sense the truth.

My section at my employer just observed non-performance RIFs at nearly a QUARTER of our workforce.
Those talented, professional, polished, and educated men and women would have a different perspective to share.
Most of them are in their late-40s and early-50s and it will be a struggle to get back to where they were during this so-called "booming" economy.

The government doesn’t count people who have stopped looking for work and are no longer on the official unemployment “books.”

This article is complete propaganda.

No one believes the true unemployment rate is 5% except a very small number of politicians, economics professors, financial reporters and their media outlet editors and bosses.

I guess we just found the dumbest people on the planet!

'The general public has "extremely little factual knowledge" about the job market and labor force..'

Au contraire, mon frère, they public has enough factual knowledge to understand that the 5% number is based on only ONE measurement of "unemployment" and certainly not the only one.

Mrs. Videopaul has a Master’s degree in in Public Health and an MBA. She’s been out of work for 16 months. Nearly 20 years in health care. She’s 43.

Don’t tell me this economy has full employment!!

Would someone explain to me what the unemployment rate is supposed to be measuring? It certainly isn’t a measurement of the percentage of Americans who are unemployed.

94,000,000+ not in the workforce. Take half that and even half that again, and you’re above 5%.

It’s more likely that at least 10% of those people are out of work.

I don’t think the 94mm+ number includes part-timers, either.

We’re becoming fossilized. A museum. And in bringing serfs here to grovel for pittances, we’re going to be ripe for the pickings very soon.

Trump offers respite for a bit, but had I children coming of age now, I’d encourage them to leave. I just don’t know where they’d be safe anymore, if anywhere. In 10 years, we are going to be a 3rd world hell.

People know what they see, unemployed and underemployed friends and relatives, if not themselves.

This reporter is a Rhodes Scholar with a master’s in financial economics from Oxford. Surely she can’t be ignorant of massive decline in the labor participation rate or the number of people underemployed or working part-time while wishing to work full-time.

So she must simiply be a leftist propagandist.

I constantly see have libs quoting at me that there is full employment. The thing is, most of them seem to live in DC, NYC or some major city. If they were to come down to, say, rural suburban FL, where every other building is shuttered since 2010, they might see why people believe differently.

We have rows upon rows of closed buildings in my area. No full time jobs, and it started after Obamacare.

As the First World becomes the Third World and Moslem some of the currently Third world countries will be much better places to be, some because they are advancing and already protecting themselves from Moslems and from being occupied by the Riff Raff of the world, some because being third world is there not a terrible thing. Bring some first world talents with you and you can live well.

The article was pretty condescending. I know what I believe and I know who I’ll be voting for. And it won’t be for who this article is shilling for..

In 2009, DC was the only place in the US that had construction cranes for housing up the yin yang. It reminded me of the old medieval cities that had people wanting to live in or near the city walls.

Such people have no clue at all about what it is to be outside these zones.
